OMR, Doesn't proper jetting go a long way to keep pipes from blueing? I always thought chrome pipes blueing was from running to lean creating excessive heat?

That stuff didn't work for mine, unfortunately. I tried with a new header on a new motor with new carbs and I think the jetting was so far off that nothing would have saved the pipes. Know I know to use a sacraficial head pipe for first time start ups!

I actually like the blue/gold hue that they get better than I like the chrome. To me it looks like it has been run hard. To each his own...

Bluemeanie:

Hey Blue, I'm sure it has a lot to do with it... I'm by no way a carb expert at all... This is truly not my gig.... I'm learning as I go.... WG should be able to provide some better insight to your question...

As for my Keihins, the procedure is to first adjust your pilots then synch the carbs & idle. On first start up and in review of my plugs, I found I was running a little rich.

So I backed the pilots out another 1/2 turn, keeping an eye on the plugs for I'd rather be a little rich than too lean....

I have to get this dialed first before getting into the jetting which requires running the bike at different throttle ranges, so can't provide any accurate assessments in regards to your question... Sorry brother...

But I can say this, in review of the Keihin jetting procedure at these different throttle ranges, it's described as rich/lean and responsiveness due to the jetting....

79MKII:
Ouch! As you stated though, jetting was way out so you where most likely as Blue mentioned running way lean... This stuff will never replace true ceramic coatings but that is an expensive process to have done on a pipe.

One thing that comes to mind looking at your image, look at the color differences in the header pipes. Cylinder 4 is yellow versus cylinders 2 & 3 being blue w/yellow...

Does cylinder 1 match 4 or 2 & 3 in discolorations?

Also, which pipe in that image, Kerker, V&H, or something else? Not sure it would matter but had to ask just the same...

I guess it doesn't really matter other than as you mentioned, jetting was whacked right off the back....

In speaking with Buzz @ Dynoman where I purchased the Kiehins... I had wrote Buzz in regards to the idle set screw adjustments and richness of the pilots....They come pre-jetted for specific makes and models of bikes. Depicted as plug and play (ride).

He replied, Sudco will pre-jet for stock motor configuration for there's no way to accomplish for all the different piston kits, cam selections, EI versus point systems etc... They will be close but not dialed in 100%...

One other thought regarding blue heat discoloration. On the J motors with the Air Induction on the exhaust side of the head, I believe I remember that the idea was to introduce air into the exhaust after the power stroke in order to burn off unburned fuel that remained after combustion. I believe they usually equipped those engines with double wall exhaust headers in order to minimize the discoloration.

Help me out, all of you who know more about this - but it would seem to me that shutting off the air from the reed valves in the head would eliminate burning the excess fuel as it goes into the header.

I have my doubts that any exhaust that is not double-walled would be able to resist turning blue with the air injection in place.

OMR - That pipe was a brand new V&H. My old V&H never turned that blue in 15 years. That was with a 1229 kit and 33 smoothbores. I now have a 1260 kit and 34 flat slides plus big valves and porting.

I noticed that #2&3 were definitely more blue at first, but the carbs were way out of synch too. After synchronizing them, the other 2 got more blue. They are almost the same now.

I think mine turned blue from being too rich instead of too lean. Does that make sense? The carbs were really rich...

Yeah, mine came that way as well... Rich!

Same time, my header hasn't turned blue (yet) but once I start riding this bike for jetting and fun, they just may turn on me....

Here's how my plug looks only after a 15 minute run time... OUCH! I now have backed my pilots out since then so keeping an eye on them...

Again, I'm not a carb expert, actually a total noob to this level... As I walk through the valley of dead.....

Does it have air injection for the exhaust? If so, then when you run rich you should get more heat in the exhaust once the air is introduced because it would have more raw fuel to burn.
