Yea that V crap on the seats of most new bikes just is awful. That was the main issue I had with the Yamaha FJ1200, that V sits you right where you got a slope going up your rear as well as the front and is just agonizing really. I'd been thinking of a goldwing for many years. My dad bought a new one way back in 1984 and I still have it too, but to anyone that has never ridden a newer goldwing, you would not believe how fantastic they are. So now I have 4 KZ650, 2 KZ1000, 750 H2 2 stroker, 1984 Goldwing and a 2008 Goldwing. Enough for now :)

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

The initial sticker-shock of a Goldwing is pretty fierce, so I chose to buy a used bike. Keep an eye on the www.gl1800riders.com message forum in the classifieds section (is a forum area) if you are interested in a Wing. There is currently one that was posted today:

That price is about 1/2 what a new one will go for unless you go out of state to one of the cut-rate dealers on cycletrader.com or one of the dealers that sells on eBay cheap.

Looks like a smokin' price on that Phoenix Goldwing. And that's only an 8-hour ride from my place.
But, I'm still having fun on the Voyager, and I can't come up with that much scratch these days.
Maybe next year...

A 2006 Wing is a fine bike. Kaw has nothing to offer in competition. Many previous Voyager owners, my self included, are certain that they've been dissed by Ma Kaw with this new Voyager. The only reason why Kawasaki didn't base the new Voyager on the 14 was because they were afraid to go up head to head with the Wing. BOP!!! If you can decipher that acronym.

Once I lightened the rear end, and pumped up the shocks, my Voyager could corner with any Wing. It was already faster than any of the 1500's.

You know that look most folks get when they've tasted something they don't really like but can't say so? Look for that face whenever you meet a 1700 Voyager owner, certainly so if he previously owned a 1200.

I truly believe that Kaw pretty much hit the mark with the new Vulcan 1700 Voyager as far as their target market. They didn't really want to go heads up with bona fide touring bikes and I think they are shooting for the cruiser rider who is now putting a batwing fairing and trunk on their Nomad. They are shooting for one engine and one frame being fitted with three stages of dress to cover all segments of the cruiser market. They obviously were not looking to take on the touring market directly. Their initial marketing had all sorts of comments about their price point and how it would be very favorable compared to the Harley Ultra which is the bike I think they are gunning for. Problem is, the Ultra has much better fit and finish and seating/ergonomics. I think that after showing the bike extensively at the International Motorcycle Shows, they are getting a lot of feedback that will cause them to go back to the drawing board to correct some of the issues the bike is presenting. I really wanted to buy a Kaw touring bike... not a cruiser. I have owned a lot of cruisers.

I have owned a Nomad... it is a cruiser with bags and windshield. I set up the Nomad for touring. Put on a trunk, passenger grab rails, larger touring windshield, Mustang touring seat and it was still a cruiser. It was a nice bike wasn't great doing interstate touring. It was fine for long dinner rides.

Oh yeah, it had much better ergonomics than the new Vulcan 1700 Voyager... the Nomad seems far roomier with a much better seating position; especially with the Mustang seat.

I had a Concours once for 1400 miles and it was gone. Not my kind of bike. The guy that sells the goldwing service CDs claims the new concours has a transponder key system and unlike new cars where you can program your own keys it's a dealer only thing and cost is $250 to make one spare key and if you happen to lose your keys it's a small $1500 mistake. Does the new Voyager have this wonderful "feature" too?

No way to know. The folks who transported the bikes for the show were not given keys. They couldn't open locked compartments and were a bit embarrassed about it hehe. I think that Kaw didn't want anyone getting the urge to start the engine.
