Crackheads get me again. was created by crazy homeless guy
Ok, I am having a problem with crack heads in my neighborhood.
This happens about once a month. I go to get on my bike and take off. All looks well, until I fire it up. Then I realize something is wrong. I look down, and one of my outermost spark plugs are snapped off. Easy enough fix, but damn annoying to say the least.
As it turns out, crack heads will walk by a bike, and if the spark plugs are easily accessible, they will try to hit it, and break the porcelain part of the plug off clean. If they are able to do it, they have a free crack pipe at my expense.
So, does anyone know a solution to prevent this? I know I could garage the bike rather than the street, but my budget doesn't really allow that right now. The rainy season is about to start, so I am thinking I will get a tarp to cover the bike, so hopefully that will help.
Thanks for any suggestions, or even any comical antidotes,
Travis, '81 KZ650

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. In a round about way of course:
Cover the bike with a tarp like you plan on, and leave a few OLD spark plugs on the ground near the bike as a "peace offering". The crackhead(s) will readily grab the old freebie plugs rather than chance getting caught trying to get to the plugs on your bike.
If that doesn't work and the crackhead(s) get greedy, hide out one night with a pellet gun for some gold ol' fashioned target practice.

Thanks for the responses. I am not really sure how to deal with catching them. I only ride the bike about once a week, so pinning down the actual night is difficult. Maybe I will start parking closer to my place. I live half way up a hill in San Francisco, so I usually like parking on a side street that is flat, instead of parking on the hill. I am considering just parking on the sidewalk in front of my place, but I need to get the leak in the front fork taken care of first.

hook an extension cord to the bike and surprise them, youll have to figure the rest out yourself due to liability issues!

On a side note, some of their "crackhead special deals" are downright amusing... a few years ago, i had one offer to sell me 1 walkie talkie. he said i could call the other one and talk to it.

I would put something really nasty on the plug like Drano, rat poison or dog poo. Then when you see that someone has stolen another plug you can laugh all the way to work. You could also just tea bag them yourself if you really want a good laugh (for those that do not know the term "tea bag" then just google it).

Make a home made alarm with a mercury switch from radio shack. When you hear something use your baseball bat and large caliber guns for a little target practice.

you can mount an old thermostat under your seat for an alarm if they stand the bike up the mercury will close circuit and set the alarm off.
