Nates vintage bike axiom: Riding is the reward for time spent wrenching.
Murphys corollary: Wrenching is the result of time spent riding.

In my opinion, today's vintage bike prices are the results of several factors, not just one. The biggie, for me at least, was a hankering for something I didn't get in my younger years. Cruisers hold no particular appeal and I'm too poor to play in the Triumph and Norton sandboxes. Likewise, there has been an explosion of interest in vintage/classic bikes the past few years.
Gas prices this spring have brought an undeniable attention to cheaper transportation. A classic looking motorcycle fits the bill for a lot of people, but they can't buy one new--it's either a HOG clone or something that looks like it was styled by a focus group of 14 year olds. So, the older bikes are getting attention and the prices reflect what the market will bear in a lot of areas.
The era of cheap vintage bikes is over, I'm afraid.
