A friend of mine has a nice old harley-davidson lowrider sittin in his garage. He thought maybe we could get it started up so he could show me what a real motorcycle is. About 15 minutes later we finally got it to start but we couldn't keep it lit. He finally decided to give up, and he quit crankin on the electric starter. Then he realized that even after stopping the button, we couldn't get the starter to quit turning over. We shut the key off, messed with the button, we tried everything. Meanwhile the old harley was turnin over for all shes worth! I was going to quickly remove the battery cable to cut all power. I soon realized that the battery had its own chrome battery cover which takes very little fingers to remove. Now that is F#%$@n stupid. He was freakin out, while I worked my way towards getting to the battery. Finally got the starter shut off, after the poor little hardley got quite a workout! I tried to convince the owner that removing all those STUPID LITTLE CHROME COVERS OVER EVERYTHING would make working on his bike much easier. Then we rode off on our trusty little jap bikes.

So, did you get to see a real motorcycle?

Yep, Jordan, that happens to HD's more often than the owners would like to admit. The aftermarket suppliers of starter solenoid kits for Harleys do a VERY good business selling replacement parts. The starters themselves are also big sellers.

That happened with my 650 once. It scared the hell out of me. Well it so happens that the clutch safety switch I thought I repaired had came out of the electrical tape and was touching the frame of the bike. At least I was able to disconnect the battery faster and find the problem.

It also happens when the starter solenoid goes bad. The contacts can weld closed giving constant power to the starter. I never fail to get a laugh out of Harleys. One night my wife and I went to dinner where there happened to be a few Harleys frequenting also. We went to leave and I think 3 out of the group of 5 Harleys would not start.
Also I always have fun sitting at a light with a group of them. Ever notice how they all have to keep reving up their engines. RUM-rum-rum-run-RUM-rum-rum-run constantly. I do the same thing imitating them on the KZ650. It just sounds so darn stupid, but I get humor out of it. I think they are too dumb to even notice I'm making fun of them. laugh:

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I have found that the easist way to keep your bike from doing that is to go old school, rip that damn starter/alternator out an replace with the always trusty, and oldie but goldie kickstart with the magneto. Either that or I spend entirely way too much time with my bultacos and have lost touch with the convince of starters and lights that dim when the rpms go down. What can I say its been a long winter.
Peace and grease-

Jordan,
You should have jumped on the bike, put it in gear, and ridden it around the block while the starter was still cranking. That may be the last opportunity you have to ride a REAL "Electric-Glide" Harley. Ed

Ohh come one, HD is not so bad.

It's not the hardware, it's the software that gets me.

A well-taken care of HD is a good solid ride. Many people can not or do not properly care for them, or perhaps they cannot afford to after paying the sticker price

We've all heard our share of 'rice burner' and 'jap bike,' I'm starting to think that some of these folks have been brainwashed by HD marketing or are just plain racist.

I gotta admit, if I could afford to buy/build a bike out of all USA made parts and labor I sure would. Who can afford that nowadays?
