Got everything ready to start her up. Will have to wait til the weather clears as I need to hang the back end out of the garage when I start it (not my garage). Chucked the tank on for a couple of photos.

Finally! Haven't touched the carbs yet but it started easily and idled steadily at about 1000 rpm. Will sync the carbs and check the pilot screws after a short test ride on the weekend. Or maybe just leave it as is for the MOT and spend some time on it aftwerwards - depends on how well it runs on the test ride.

Thanks Guy. I'm really glad I had another go at the bodywork, the centre stripes do look better.
The tank will need a sand and another coat of clear, but that will be a job for next winter - the stripes that I had to straighten out only have one coat of clear on them so the edges are a bit rough, all the rest are perfect.
Can't wait to go for a blat up and down my local test strip on the weekend!

Congrats extreme nice work. What clearcoat are you using? i used spraymax 2k clear some times and it is very good.On my bike i started to sand down the sidecovers because it has some nasty bubbles .The scary thing about that is that it may be the candylayer and not the clear and if i wetsand to much and the bubbles is not in the clear yeah you know the rest

I went for a test ride this morning. The road was still a bit wet but the weather wasn't going to get any better before I take the bike to get an MOT. Just meant I had to do some cleaning afterwards.
The bike ran really well... until it didn't
After the first run it kept shutting down. After spending the afternoon chasing my tail I figured out that the stator was toast. Pulled the one out of the Zephyr and will replace it tomorrow (the bike has a 750 alternator in it). I'm just glad I have a replacement so I can still make it to the MOT.
@Rolf: I get all my paint from a company here in Germany that specialises in motorcycle paint.

Swapped out the stator and now the battery is holding a charge. Not sure I'm getting full power from the regulator. I was getting about 12.5V at about 2000rpm - it was pretty early on a Sunday morning so I didn't want to open the throttle too wide...
The 750 stator has some sort of coating on it. Not sure if it will hold up to the engine oil but it will be back out after the MOT anyway. Have a replacement MK2 stator on the way.
Can anyone tell me how much AC voltage I should between each of the leads on a disconnected stator?
Here's the 750 stator:
And the MK2 one that was in it before:

Oil won't hurt it 50-70v AC per leg.

No load tests are inconclusive. But, I'd say 70+ AC is a reasonable target. 50 is too low.

The stator is shot. The burnd clear coat lost his isolation effect and short cuted the copper wire.

Thanks guys. The stator in the second picture is in the bin already. Should have looked a bit closer before I put it on the bike!
I'll test the regulator output properly when the bike gets back from the MOT test. If that's too low I'll check the stator leads individually.
