What to do?
09 Aug 2017 20:14
So, one of my Dad's friends from when I was little (46 now), has offered me his 74 Z1 with 4 digit engine#. It has been bored to 1050cc, has electronic ignition, has been painted black (a long time ago). Now the stinger is, it's been sitting since 2004. The engine is stuck, the coils are wrong, has an old Kerker, the wiring is suspect. It's all there, and I have the ability to get it right, even if it takes a while. The old guy is dear to me, and I don't want to insult him. He is thinking of the bike the way it was, and knows what nice bikes are bringing. But fact is, this isn't that bike anymore.
So what would yall offer, it's all there, even if some of it is in a Rubbermade tub.

Not a 74 front end.

There's a LOT non-original on that bike. I would pass. Otherwise your offer, which in this case would probably be $500 or less, will insult him. I would just say I appreciated the opportunity but just don't have the time to do the bike justice. Ed

Guage cluster is wrong too meaning the whole front end is incorrect.

Hi MadKaw500,
Insufficient data.
Frame# and engine#?
Are the original sidecovers there?
Condition of the tank, inside & out.
Airbox?
A pic of the other side of the bike would help too.
From what we can see there's more wrong & missing than what's right. Depends on what you want to make it; a beater, nice daily rider or complete resto?
Looks like a winter project to us....

If the bike is a 74 Z1A with an early four digit 73 Z1 engine it's not worth a complete nut and bolt restoration. If you have the numbers wrong and it's a # matching bike, sure, restore it. But with all the wrongs you better have deep pockets. There's not much Z1 left so you'd be starting with a frame and motor, and a froze up one at that. Keep in mind sitting since 04 is not long to freeze up a motor. There might be more internally wrong.
Good Luck
