1978 Z1R - How much should I offer for it?

Hello KZriders,

I have a opportunity to make a offer on a 1978 Z1R. I have not seen the bike but I have been told it does not run and that is had a wiseco piston kit installed 10 years ago. The half moons blue out after the rebuild and the bike does not have the air box or sin gal lights. I dont have a whole lot of info besides this.

What would be a reasonable offer that would not offend the guy that is thinking about selling it?

Thank you!

Mark

Without more information I don't think I'd make an offer at all. Need photographs and title status at minimum.

Not enough info.
Pics would help. More & closer is better.
Does seller have the airbox & any other parts or manuals?
Is the motor the correct # for the frame?
Clear title?
Any other parts missing?
Internal tank condition?
Was it put to bed correctly, i.e. battery removed, carbs drained, inside shelter, not outside under a tarp or some other bubba storage for 10 yrs?

Yes, Plus 1 + 2. from above. Too many variables. I see location as New Mexico, (Hot & cold weather).
Plus, if after piston work, Cam plugs blew out! Too much pressure built up in crankcase from blow by? Rings not seated
or improper cly. wall clearence's.
If title matches frame, engine close # and frames not trashed.
Engine cases, bare frame and clear title would sell to the 1-800 exporters for a $1000 alone.
Check it out for sure! Could be anywhere from $500 to $2500??

Thank you all!

Agree not enough info as I have not seen the bike. I was thinking of offering 1500-2000.00. I am hoping I can get to look at it soon but it sounds like I need to make him a offer before I can see it as he really doesnt care if he sells it or not.

I was told it was a basket case from a local salvage yard. As far as I know the tank and body are in good condition. The air box is missing and I have to assume a ton of other parts are missing. The story was a guy rebuilt it for him and did a burn out right after and the cam plugs fell out or got sucked in the motor. He also mentioned the wiring harness has been molested because the guy took off the turn signals.

I guess i'll see if I can look at first, I was thinking 1500 would be reasonable offer to get started. I will def check the serial numbers and 18" front wheel that came on the 78.

Thank you!

Make any cash offer you want up front, $1500-$3500. Doesn't matter as any contract, verbal or not, has to be reasonable and fair for both sides. If you can't see it before an offer is made, that makes it unreasonable.
Just make sure you say the sale is contingent on inspection and condition.
