I will be trying the C5 ignition system on my twin and the 1976 GL1000 project. I think the multiplespark feature is very interesting. So many project motorcycles, so little time. These are not photos of my wing, but they are inspiration!

For what it's worth, on my 650 I replaced all my engine mount bolts (actually pretty much every external bolt and nut on the bike except for the fine threaded, which I can't find) with standard A2 stainless.......

Which ones are you missing in stainless? Ed

The dome nuts for the upper rear shock mounts, the lower triple tree clamp bolts and the steering stem top bolt - we're all metric over here so standard pitches can be found at any hardware store, but those are fine pitch and hard to come by in stainless. No big deal, I can get them in chrome, look after them and replace them if needed - I just happen to have a deep and passionate hatred for rust...

Back to the original topic, that optical ignition looks interesting, I'll have to look into that.

I soda blasted the engine. It did a good job of removing the paint and dirt, but there was some hardcore oxidization under the paint. So I started polishing the cases and sanding the fins for paint. I also discovered that someone has been mucking around with the ignition. Not sure what its out of, but the advancer that supposed to be on this bike is supposed to have a M8 bolt running through it. Instead there was this cobbled bolt, and an advancer with a M6 bolt.(maybe a 400?) Ill have to look at what I
need to run my C5 ignition, but i may need to get a new advancer of ebay. Also when i pulled the starter I noticed the starter sprocket was not in there either, and the chain was hanging loose.... , i'm gonna pull every cover off this thing to see if there are any other surprises. I should have the jugs and head painted tomorrow which means the polished covers and stainless bolt kit will go on. :woohoo: Ive only got a week before I move to San Jose, and id like this thing rolling in the frame before i do as the project bikes wont be coming until I can find some better housing (read; a garage). I've never tried to find a apartment/house to rent from another state without being there, what a pain in the ass...

Turns out that the starter sprocket falls out when you take the starter motor out, so no worries there. Cases are polished, I painted the jugs and head and cleaned up the fins. Couple things left to polish before its done. Any suggestions on replacements for wire clamps that go under the case bolts?

McMaster sells the dead soft 1100 series aluminum sheets, I use the .040 thick 2" x 24" stock and I punch the hole with my Roper - Whitny No.5 hand punch.

got a little photo happy, but im so pleased with how it turned out, and even more pleased I don't have to polish anymore. My custom bolts/spacers came in for the close tolerance motor mounts as well.

Clean, the top rear mount plates are good. If people take the time to look, it's good to give them nice details to find.

Well if you know someone with a stand alone buffer that's the way to go. If not I would start at 400 grit with some soapy water (depending how bad your cases are you might want to start at 320 or 150) and move up ,600, 800,1000,1500, then get a small buffing wheel for a drill and some rouge. The key is to not move up to the next grit unless you have all the scratches of the previous grit sanded out. Also having the covers removed makes it a lot easier.
