Need advice on 80 kz 1000 was created by crusierlover
A friend of mine and I were going to take a 80 model kz 1000 and make it into a cafe racer.Things have changed between he and I and our arrangement.I am going to take the bike bike I suppose.I have a stock chrome rear fender. The bike has a small seat with cowl on it now.My idea would be to go back stock as much as possible. This would mean rear fender, tailight, change the vance and hines back to stock exhaust, find a stock air box, remove the pods, etc.I would need a seat, at least a working speedometer,I will have to forego signal lights. The bike runs strong. The footrests are way too far back for me.I am an old 64 year old guy, I need forward type controls. If I do get the bike back, I will need some stock parts if you know of any. Thanks for input.

Be sure to post a list of any parts you are looking for and folks here should be able to help find them. In 1980 Kawasaki made the following KZ1000 models:
KZ1000-A4 (KZ1000) (1980)
KZ1000-B4 (LTD) (1980)
KZ1000-C3 (Police 1000) (1980)
KZ1000-D3 (Z1R) (1980)
KZ1000-E2 (Shaft) (1980)
KZ1000-G1 (Classic) (1980)

Am I correct in assuming that you currently are looking for the following items for a stock 1980 KZ1000-A4?
rear fender
tail light
exhaust system
air box
seat
speedometer

Welcome to the forum, A little more info on the bike would be great. Is is a shaft, etc? Going back to the stock air box is a good idea,...pods are hard to tune. I would not necessarily go back to a stock pipe., they are expensive There are plenty of after market ones. A good aftermarket speedo will be fine,...make sure you get the correct gear ratio. Harley ones won't work. Z1enterprises, old bike barn, and redline cycle are good places to find parts. Ebay also has lots of KZ parts. What other help are you looking for?

I am sorry to be slow responding, I work nights, just woke up.Yes this list of parts are what i need.It is a 80 with non mk2 motor,1015 cc.I think it was called an ltd.I am going to post engine and frame numbers here to make it easier for you guys to know what I have.I will get those numbers put here tomorrow.I have had many bikes, probably 30 or more.I just sold 2 suzuki 850 bikes. The kz has always been my favorite 4 cylinder.Question: I have a set of stock f into 2 exhausts. The mufflers are kind of messed up.The exhausts and headers look ok.I was going to take the vance and hines off to make the bike easier to tune, i could use a stock airbox and jetting.I will have to take the carbs off and see what jets are in there. The PO might have left stock jets and used the pods and exhausts.I have seen that done, which makes tuning impossible.I will have to find out what stock jets sizes are, go back with them. That is another problem.Nothing beats the original mikuni jets.I have a shop manual.I have time, and a little bit of patience. And not a lot of money. Here is my goal-1.if i can take the bike back to stock, with stock exhaust, seat, lighting, i will.A speedometer that is legal and functional is good enough.I do not need all the usual lights and safety switches such as sidestand, clutch switch etc.2.If I could use the vance and hines and not make a tuning nightmare i would, far easier than redoing the whole thing.if not, it will be for sale.If I sell it, of course oictures would be posted here.I would trade straight up for a stock system if anyone is interested most likely. The guy who put the exhaust on had to fabricate a rear brake pedal that was extended and bent around under and out from the vance and hines so one could put a foot on the pedal, looks like it came that way, but it clearly did not.I love the kz bikes, I appreciate all help given me.

is a good place for the seat and other pieces.

tuning with a 4 into 1 is no harder than tuning with any other pipe.

1976 through 80 and a lot of the parts will fit. Get those numbers posted and we can be more informed to help you out.
Just post in the WANTED section for Parts and we have a few members that have a lot of parts and will contact you.
look in the PARTS FOR SALE section and that might help also.

Can you post a picture ?

There are a lot of old farts in this forum.

Here is what I am starting from. There used to be a guy here kz10001 that had lots of parts, but I could never get any from him.

As you can see, lots of blueing on the pipes. He has taken off the airbox, will have to find one.And the jets sizes were not ever increased to acomodate the pipes or pods most likely. He fabricated the unusual wrap around tubing where a fender might have been in the rear for the tag and tag light mounting. He fabricated out of metal some flat sidecovers.he removed the stock instrument panel and put on a tach about 2 inches in diiameter that doesnt work and the same for the speedo. He removed all the signal lights.he has an illfitting seat and cowl.I want:
1.stock seat, rear fender, and tailight.I have a chrome rear fender he had in his parts bin that might have come off if it.It has one of those stupid looking sparto tailights. I wont be able to put an instrument cluster, i have found them on ebay for over $300.So a seat, working speeometer, airbox, proper tuning, and i will be pretty much happy.
