you also need the corresponding rotor and possibly a different engine cover. I would be surprised if the Dyna S was drawing significantly more current than stock. I don't think that is your problem but upgrading your charging system is always good.

Docto:

I thought I could get away with the rotor and cover that I have? I've seen posts here before about it being a bolt in swap with the only modification being to add switched power to the rectifier. As for the draw- I was running points before so I wouldn't have had draw there. I've read into it more and talked to another member here, and found out that the single phase systems usually have issues with the Dyna S while they won't have issues with the electronic ignitions.

I just put a new reg/rec on it for the single phase system for now, and upgraded to a good AGM battery. With the AGM, I'm charging at 13.9v now which is a good improvement. Might look at upgrading to an LED headlight and tail light to reduce more draw, but I think I'll end up swapping over to the 3 phase soon enough.

Thanks for the tips!

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationIf you are going 3 phase don't waste money on getting a stock R/R. Get a SH775, the real deal type. It uses new technology and will help your stator live.

Ed- is that R/R a direct swap in? Or is there some more work that has to get done with that one?

Sean- what year is your 650?

Just took the bike for a decent shake down ride of around 25 miles. Stopped to fuel up halfway through, and had no issue starting after that stop. Charging is still up around 13.8-13.9v with the new R/R and the new AGM battery. I think I might be ok for the time being.

Sean- seems like the D1 is the 1978 model. Maybe your R/R is just in better shape than mine was and is holding out for the time being?

yep, I was pretty sure. Don't get confused by the mish mash of parts on my bike. The charging system is all correct for 1978. The previous owner did a very good job of refreshing most everything, so there could be new or reconditioned parts. I just wanted you to know that the '78 charging system is capable of working with 3 ohm coils.

Dyna does offer 5 ohm coils which might help take some of the load off your charging system. I know that is what Honda cb550 guys need to use, as few have found the mid sized Honda charging to be capable of keeping up with 3 ohm coils.

Sean- I'm still running the stock coils on my bike, I forget what the Ohm rating is on them. This might also be something for me to look into. For now though, I've had the battery sitting cold (before starting) at 12.8 volts, and charging around 13.8-13.9v. I've started to look into LED headlights to reduce the draw on the charging system as well.

So I just installed the LED headlight on the bike, and am getting charging voltages up to 16.5 volts when the bike is running around 4,000 RPM per the service manual.

I also recently installed an AGM battery, and a new regulator.

My question here is whether or not the 16.5 volts is going to kill the battery as that's a pretty high charge

EDIT:

I just took the bike for a 4 mile shake down, and charging has shifted down to 14.0 volts over 4k RPM. I'm not sure if I've already cooked a cell in the AGM...

Standing voltage with the coils off is 12.8-12.9 volts.
