its def alot of money just in expendable parts like the oil you dain may be new, gaskets are about 120 a set plus the headgasket mine was fifty, stripped bolts etc.just the gaskets and lube is 200 is h right there. just to tear it down for no reason. rings range in price but figure around 100 or more, so be sure .

OK ok.. good lord guys :D That was another big issue was the cleanliness of out shop. LOTS of dust. My silly little bastard cats love to climb on everything with their dirty mitts... And there isn't a clear/clean workbench in the whole place. Yes i understand its more than a Briggs engine.. i would like to step up to something that gives back more when its finished. Whenever i rebuild a Briggs and Stratton im usually happy in the end but then i start wondering what i could even use it for. No my engine doesn't knock or smoke. Doesn't even use any oil.. just fowls cylinder 3 spark plug with oil after its parked for the night. I guess im just a gigantic hypochondriac. I got a sick feeling in my stomach everytime i ride my bike because my valves chatter so much on the right side of the engine. I know its just a matter of replacing shims. It runs pretty lean too. used to sound like firecrackers going off whenever i let off the throttle.. not so much anymore but its still a bit lean. I think ill just adjust the valves and put it all back together again. Even as it sits i could DESTROY any car or motorcycle in this town (excluding crotch rockets). It has a very healthy growl and runs like a monster. So yes... this thread is a dud as far as projects go :D I get my motorcycle license this spring and i would hate to not be able to blast off to work every morning on the thing. Maybe next winter. MAYBE even this summer if the motor goes tits up for some reason (VERY doubtful... maybe even impossible B) ) Ill tear the bike down and start cleaning.

Thats basically how the bike has been the whole time i have owned it. Might be a few dead spots in the Valve adjusting videos  But i suppose the bike looks pretty damn good for now. I just wanted to clean up the frame and motor. Theres quite a bit of rust in the batter box under the seat. The gas tank is scratched all to hell and only has 2 coats of matte black spray paint on it..

The dark spots on the heel of the cam don't matter, that area of the cam normally has no load on it. Get yourself a cheap valve shim change tool and get those valve clearances where they should be, less than .002 is going to be a problem soon. Valves only clatter when they are real loose- like .008+, so if you are getting clatter from the right side of the motor its more likely piston slap, clutch basket or timing chain rollers, slipper or tensioner, maybe exhaust leaks?.

The engine itself could be cleaned up pretty well while still on the bike. Anyway more cleaning now means little less later when it all comes apart for a rebuild. Anyway you should do what i did and just get another motor and build it while still riding the other. That way you can take all the time you need.

Thats not a bad idea. I should've learned from my last little project (still in the works) i never posted anything about it but i got a 1978 KZ750 twin and i pulled the motor in hopes to make a little go cart... with a BIG motor :D I tore the head off and found some scoring but not much and it had a stripped spark plug hole about cylinder 1. I took the head and cylinders to a local machine shop and as of right now i need about 250 bucks to give them for the valve job and honing. Maybe ill finish that one and see what happens from there B)

Hey thanks man!! I couldn't find a complete kit anywhere for the life of me. I called APE and they were cool as hell and told me everything that was included in the kit. Even comes with Valve stem seals (which i have already) but thats cool. I also have a metric kit of O-rings so im set there. I am going to do the rebuild but not just yet. when i start working, we'll see how much money is coming in and ill decide the time from there. Another big concern i had with my motor was the drivetrain. The clutch never seems to fully engage or dis-engage. Its not bad but i wasn't too nice the transmission when i got my bike either so i have my doubts. Im sure it could use new plates and springs. It is due for a go over for sure. The previous owner didn't store the bike worth a damn. We had it started on carb cleaner and old gas. he ripped up the yard on it too to prove it ran good before i bought it. Its not how it runs but what has been done to it and how it was treated before and after i bought it that bothers me.

Well the exhuast cross over pipe was rusted off and i have since install a Kerker 4-1 which only made the fire crackers behind me even louder :D Its just running a bit lean. Im gonna have to replace the rubber boots in between the carbs and airbox.. might as well be made of cement.. Im sure they dont seal up well.
