Thanks for the tips guys. Like I said before, I'm not worried too much about comfort, things will be miserable at times I'm sure and I'm okay with that, but I'll do what I can. I don't have the cash to do much more to the bike that's going to cost $$$, I've got to make sure I have the gas money (and emergency money) to finish the trip at this point.

MFolks - good info on soldering. The joint looked nice and bright silver, not blackened. What would be the best way to test to make sure there is not too much resistance at the joint?

Jonny - Sweet Man! I've read Zen several times, great book, always provides some inspiration too. I grew up in Red Lodge (before the Beartooth Pass) which is mentioned in the book. I'm going to be coming through there and yellowstone on my return loop. I'll post my planned route soon, and I'll definitely try and find your thread.
