Moshua's Kz200 Project Bike
23 Jul 2011 20:53
Today I got back into a kz, well actually i bought a bike completely disassembled and in pieces. Its a 1978 Kz200, with 8k miles and electric start. Motor and tranny out of frame and front fork and wheels all off, and all brakes dissassembled.
I loaded up everything into my VW Golf and there it sits for now. I'm quite excited for this build. My previous bike sold last summer was a 1979 Kz400 and i loved it.
the old bike
and the new bike although it does have a bit of rust, it all seems to be surface rust, transmission seemed to shift through gears fine and motor had good compression seems like to me.
I plan on a fairly colorful paint scheme for this bike. Going into this project i've had it in my mind that i want it to look similar to this bike's paint scheme
we'll see at the end of all this what really happens though(everyone changes their mind)!
Wish me luck and i'm hoping any questions i have as i go through this build the community can help me out, Thanks to everyone who may follow and watch my build

Are you going for a stock look or one closer to the one in the picture? Have lots of work ahead of you but it is also great to take the time and slowly refurbish a bike and watch it come to life again. What ideas do you have kicking around in your head about how you want this project to go?

I'd like to go with a fairly stripped down look, possibly a cafe/fighter style but definately not keeping completely stock, wire wheels will stay. Really i'm open to anything but i have experience with cafe style. Do the Ton (I'm not sure this bike will reach 65mph?)

You may have to be creative in the resurrection as they isn't much in the way of aftermarket parts available for the KZ200...which also suggests you may have to become one with eBay. The restoration should be fun.

Picture dump, I got it out of the dub and into the driveway and halfway assembled, just doing a check for missing parts
Here's the goods:
I assembled it that far in about 45 minutes I just wanted an idea of the bikes size. Comments, criticisms, and words of encouragement greatly appreciated (elbow grease would be helpful too as you can see there is some rust ha)

I have a few questions that came up as I'm tearing through the bike parts...
1. Can the dampeners that are inside the rear wheel hub assemble be made. Or do they have to be a specific thickness or weight. They seem to be missing in the parts.
2. Any helpful hints or threads concerning hiding battery? Methods or examples greatly appreciated.
3. And last one here for now, does the sticker that is on front of frame need to stay on bike legally, the vin number is stamped on frame?

Not sure about the legality of removing the sticker but from what others have said, I'd leave it on there. Some have said that they had problems as the sticker has the manufacturers info if stopped or for license applications. Some who rake frames cut the stock neck and then give the part with the sticker on it back to owner so he can carry it on bike just in case. I always just tape it off and paint frame. Doesn't hurt to leave it on there!
