KZ 650 Cafe/ Street Project was created by benmorgan82

Ok this is my first post and first KZ project. I am currently building a KZ 650 with a wiseco 810 kit. I ran across a set of spoked wheels with a 170 rear tire. So right now I am in the process of widening the rear swingarm to accept this wide of a tire. The plan is to put an inverted front end on it with the matching wheel. I am also in the market for some piggy back rear shocks. Let me know your thoughts.

Well I am a Harley person by trade but I recently became a motorcycle instructor and no longer can afford a Harley. I have grown to really love the look of a cafe style motorcycle. I like things clean and simple but different.

I am currently in the process of cleaning up the frame and getting rid of all of the none essentials. I am also having the engine powder coated. Not sure if I should stick with the stock gas tank or go with something different???

I am also going to make my own wiring harness, I hope??? I think I can manage but we will see. Just going to run a headlight and essentials for charging/starting. Luckily I am around it all day and have some very capable students to help in our down time. Hope to have it done by spring.

Welcome! It looks like you are off to a good start. You need to get in contact with a member who goes by loudhvx. He has a bare bones wiring diagram that should help you out. So how much did you have to widen the swingarm to fit the 170 in there?

What I did was trimmed the out side ends of the swing arm so that only the caps would fit on the ends( about 1/2 inch each side) then split it in the middle and got a 1.5 OD 1.334 ID steel tube and fit over each half of the swingarm. So long story short about an inch. But have not addressed chain yet so may be much more fab.

Thanks on the contact will do!

Alright made a little progress today. In this picture I show my swing-arm cut and almost ready to re weld around an inch wider. The pipe that I will slip over the middle part will be in tomorrow. I also have to mill out the axle grove to 3/4 inch to clear the new larger axle.

In this picture I am showing how I put indention to add a little more clearance. I just lined up the tire and marked where it would be throughout the adjustment to add a little room. Just used a u block and a press.

In this pic I am showing how we welded up the bracket on the front of the frame below the neck.I just like things as clean as I can get them. And I am actually mounting my voltage regulator on the inside of the frame with the fins pointing forward. I am trying to make the bike look as clean and simple as possible so most things will be hidden.

Nice work on the frame and swingarm.

The stock swingarms were known to flex, and widening it and adding a bigger tire may stress it some more.
You might want to consider adding a brace to the arm.
I had a brace added to the bottom of a stock swingarm by a buddy:
