Great score Craig!! I loved my old 550. It's my avatar right now. A gpz550 would be a sweet bike. I'm on the look out for a 550 for my daughter but there's just none around here. Good luck with your new project.

I've got an 83 gpz750 project. Here's a pic. It's jammed in the back of my ford escort and it's 100% complete, just need to assemble it.

nice...mine was next to the ocean..wait till you see the pics...i can fix it...6 months outisde in pacific grove ca will turn red wood black and anything left outside gets acidic eat jobs...leave a pair of jeans on a fence outside for 3 months and they will be soft and rotten like they were in the woods for a decade......

but it's all there....i have seen folks use the 3 spoke rims like the ones on mine and in your pic....for trackday -vintage racers ect..poor mans dymags without the cracking og magnesium...

sjipped sleep today and rolled the 550 out to get some oil sporayed in the plugs...carbs soaking-header drained if water...and a good pressure watch and inventory.....


the tank could not be saved...the motor turns nice and clean..the plugs were great...the carbs free'd up ...the header is spotty...the covers had the original paint underneath the can f-up...from the p.o....all in all i can get it going and made it look 100% better already...

the pressure wshr pulled most of the ocean rust off...and peeled everthing down nice...

broke a fitting on my neighbors P wshr had to run to town and repair...not slept in days...lol

carbs are looking good and will need gone through...filter chargered the filters the other day and restored em right....elec ign is really clean

later...3 hrs sleep and off tpo work...gonna have to lay low tomorrow or the bags grow blacker under my eyes like joe namath...later

well i got the header redone and turns out it was pretty rusted through from sitting a few blocks from the pacific ocean for ten yrs....
i just sand blasted it anyways and flat blacked the header and satin blacked out the can...
Front brakes are 90 perecnt better and i bought a nice condition rear caliper rather than rebuild my seized one...i get great pressure to the rear caliper banjo but it is blocked from there...anyone need a needs rebuild caliper??
Going through the carbs next,they move freely and were not oxidized like the outer was...redid a lot of brackets and cases but wanna hear it run beofre i strip it and start the whole thing to repaint....either a white body set or a greeny...

more this weekend...this bike is next at bat now that the MKII is riding
last one...wait till you see how much it changed it was knarly and left for dead...i am in love with this bike already...

Cool project. I grow more fond of these gpzs every day. Looks like you need to build a couple of more work benches. You have too many project bikes going at one time. I have to resist the urge to go past two bikes. Oh yea, and a project car, and an old boat, and a project outboard motor. I guess that I have the disease too. It must be contagious. Good luck.

Nice I just picked up a 82 GPz550 myself.

Before everyone jumps my ass.... Craig asked me to do this for him so I'm not hijacking his post ok....

Due to me rectifier going out recently, I replaced it with a Z1 combo rect/reg unit... To make a long story short, gained 1 Vdc to my entire electrical system and more importantly for performance, to my coils/sparkies!

At idle, 13.8/9Vdc
At 3000 rpm, 14.2/3Vdc
At 4Krpm up 14.7Vdc

With lights on, 14.5Vdc at 4Krpm....
