The finished product soldered in place.

I hope to have them back together soon. I got my tank back as well, so with a little work I should be able to fire her up.
If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

Update:

I haven't forgot this bike, I moved last year and started graduate school so I had a lot on my plate this winter. I did get the carbs done.

I had the tank boiled out and coated, it was terrible. Here is what the fuel valve and electric shut-off looked like. You can image how bad the carbs were...

Attachment 6.jpg not found

The fuel sender was toast, I had to get a used one from eebay and clean it up. Pretty simple, I am sure these could be rebiult if you meet the proper resistence in the winding. I didn't want to mess with it and just cleaned up a replacement.

The factory fuel valve and electric shutoff are not going back on. I put a much more reliable set of parts on the bike. Pingel makes nice stuff. B)

I am all ready to try and fire up the engine. I really don't think it has run in at leat 10 years. I have cranked and observed spark and it builds oil pressure. There is new oil in the pan and fresh gas in the tank. I am grabbing the camera and going to lite this fire.
If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

I am stoked! It started, it ran, it sounded pretty good. I got a short vid of it running. My camera skills aren't the best and I was concerend about a lot of other things than where the camera was pointing.

This is the first time I have heard a 6 cylinder kawasaki run with my own ears. Looks like my $800 gamble may have better odds than I thought. I need to get this thing road worthy, and as it sits it got a long ways to go. I have to sit down an make a list. APE tensioner, front fork seals, rear tire, breaks, flush the coolant, put the airbox back togerther, etc.... this summer is gonna be fun!B)

Congrats! That's a good feeling when you get the old bike to fire for the first time. I love the sound of an inline 6.

Yet another year... enough is enough...

I stripped the luggage rack off of the back, pulled the rest of the air box out and washed her down. Pulled the coils and valve cover off and had a peak inside. Can guides and roller looked new and there was some writing on the cam gears, checked the valve clearances, looks like a few intake valves are tight.

A few years back when I got this bike to run, it sounded ok, but it smoked badly. I am going to pull the top end apart and have a look.

After I washed it down

Damn that's big friggin engine...

I also discovered that a previous owner had replaced the upper and lower engine mount bolts with mild steel all-thread to install those case guards. The all thread appears to be loosing the battle with gravity.... gonna need some engine mounts bolts too.

Low miles, wow... is that one yours?

I mic'd the cams and they are stock (you never know). Called up Web Cams and had a quick chat. They can regrind these for me, can bump lift to .358 or .375 and increase duration. They have seen a few of these cams before.
Probably going to stay shim over bucket, but I will use some heavy duty valve springs. buckets, shims, and springs are the same as the 4 cylinder bikes.

Was going to call them as well Larry, they list a few grinds in the last catalogue. You suggested their mild cam grind id another discussion.

I spent the better part of the evening pulling the exhaust off this bike. The factory exhaust is in nice shape and probably worth hanging on to. It did not come off without a fight though.

Now I can get into the fun stuff and pull motor apart.
