If you are running anything but an O.E.M. clutch cable, it will not last!!! End of question.
I have never seen an aftermarket cable that was anywhere near the quality of an O.E.M. cable.
If you got the 80 model ball type clutch release, a properly routed and lubed O.E.M. clutch cable, and no sharp edges on the cable adjuster, or on the lever perch. That cable should last YEARS!!!!
I ran some killer clutch springs, and never went through clutch cables.
I NEVER held my clutch disengaged for more than 10 seconds. Light starts to turn green, then pull the clutch lever in, and put it in first.
I see people sit through a train, or a red light with the clutch lever pulled in. Thats a no no!!

i would hate to have to cut the bracket off this pipe and re-weld another on.
a custom bracket that clamped to the (basically)vertical tube would be cool.
hard to describe tho :pinch: .

A great old Bassani Superbike pipe!!!! Most of the Bassani Superbike pipes sold were plasma coated before they were painted. Thats why you never had much rust on a Bassani pipe. I would not cut the bracket off the pipe. You will lose the coating around where you weld the new bracket on.
Your idea with the bracket to the vertical tube would be the way to go. Plus if you wanted to get real fancy, use the rear exhaust rubber dampners from like the KZ900 made into your bracket, and then your pipe would be rubber mounted too!!!
