I am swapping my swingarm for the 83 GS..

I was wondering if this requires and spacer behind the rear sprocket.. Old Kawman says to use 2 x 3/8" spacers but I still have almost 7/16" of space left on the disc brake side..
&
If i line up the sprocket with the countershaft sprocket the wheel is not centered?

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I can't really help you on this but have you tried the "Search" function at the top of the page? Also try looking in the Archives as the GS swap has been covered many times before. Good luck.

I have done it on mine, I can measure if you like..I essentailly went thru my collection of axle spacers until i found the right combination. i can say that I did end up using one from the original GS set up, so I would keep those around if you can...
see my earlier post in projects for a close up of the axle area, that might help too...

ok.. Did u align the front and rear wheels?

Is the wheel dead center of the bike?

Are both spacers close to the same dimension..

let me take a look tommorrow. I did align them using a laser pointer, worked pretty well. I was mostly concerned about the alignment of the sprockets, which was right on when I was done..
I can't gaurentee it would be exactly the same for you...

I just did the same mod on my GPZ1100 I put three 3-1/2mm spacers on each side. I am useing a LTD1000, 16" rear rim. Make sure that you put the spacers on the outside of the rear brake mounting bracket not on the inside. If you are useing the same sprocket hub as was used on the oryginal installation the sprocketts should aligne automaticly. I also used a KZ1300 axel with larger bearings to accomodate the extra with. This was a very easy swap. The trick is finding the right ammount of chain links with the right size rear sprocket. I am also useing 14" shocks, in order not to lower the bike. Lowering the bike makes the bike handle much worse.

aacoop,
Here's what i've got:
right side spacer is 24.5mm (brake side)
left side is 13.5mm (sprocket side)
I used the stock GS axle, and the stock adjusters. I think I'll go back to the KZ axle since it has the bolt head instead of the round end...
I think the left spacer is KZ, but the right one is GS (not sure. I just always kept a box of axle spacers on hand, so when I did the swap I had a pretty wide choice. I did want to keep the # of spacers to a min. though.
My shocks are ZRX, also about 14", but I welded tabs for them just a smidgen back to keep the height the same as original. Chain, I just got it a little long so I was sure to get the count right, since the swingarm is a little longer.
sorry this took soooo long!

That's great guys I really appreaciet it..

I am using the stock 18" rim.. I have 1.260 total width to make up in spacers.

So .630 ( 16mm) each side.. to center the wheel but to align the sprocket perfect the wheel is offset by 3/16" 4 mm

I don't see how there can be so much variation??

Which side needs the spacer chain or brake? I can maybe take some pics of mine and give you measurements if needed.
