The 'J' project: was created by Bad Kaw
I'll try this again. Yesterday I (evidently) put too much info on the post and when I tried to submit it I got some rejection message. So, here goes:

This one from the right side. It's an '81 'J' model with 36 flat-slides, a ZX7R triple clamp modified by Kurt "Paul" Musgrave and Graves Motorsports, ZX9R forks, ZX7R wheel and rotors, ZX6R rear wheel, off-set sprocket and 530 conversion, slightly modified swing-arm, Graves rear-sets modified by Paul Musgrave, 'J' model fuel tank with ZX7R filler cap welded in by WesTek. Okay, this is how I got "rejected" the first time; needless to say: I've had a lot done to it, and it ain't done.

The reason for the 'black blob' on the fuel tank is that when the filler-cap was welded in the result was bear metal, so I taped it and blasted it black until I can get it to the painter...sure is cool though, huh?;)

From the left. You can see the forks and wheels a bit better...sorry, the beast is in the garage at the moment and waiting for a bloated Suzuki to get its fat arse off the lift. :)

The 4.5" ZX6R rear wheel, modified (welllll, ground off a couple tabs and a smidgin' of clearance) swing-arm, tiny-turnies are there as a left over of the previous theme. A couple buddies helped put the thing together the first time in ELR-esque livery (real ELR tank and painted GPz1100 sides/tail, and painted GPz550 fairing)...sounds 'right' ... looked 'wrong'. The stubby 550 fairing made the front end look 'WalMart', and some-how the bike took on a 'nose up' physical appearence. This is the diametric opposite of what I'm going after.
The solution was to go 'extreme' and get a second bike. The second one is the 'ELR Clone' that I can feature later (modified suspension, but that's all). This one (the 'J') is getting big 17" PMs (complete with over-size rotors and calipers), a mono-shocked rear suspension, a 916 Airtech tail section, custom bent exhaust, and a big ol' single round head-light.

Graves rear-sets, off-set counter-shaft sprocket. Easiest way to make rear-sets work: bolt on a plate and 'tap' mounting holes into the plate for your rear-sets.

...okay, this is my solution, so I don't know if it's the "best", but I'm simple and it worked for me. ;)

i have a solution for the chicanes... they need to go on my turbo drag bike. 8^) have to lever that arm up behind your back to get them out of your garage... we'll work on that tho.

i flat-out LOVE this bike tho man! i'd been debating on which model to do next, and i think that you have decided it for me. it was between a mkII and a z1r.

the next bike's gonna be mkII, zrx1100 swing/shocks, probably a zx9 or zx7 rear wheel... similar paint job to yours. maybe a little crazier.

btw, how much offset on that countershaft sprocket? been trying to figure out how much i'm gonna need to run the 5.5" 636 rear on mine.

Hey thanks for the complements! It's in progress, a couple of the big mods and It'll be time to get it to the home garage and finish it up. The rear wheel is a 5" (not 4.5" like I think I posted up above) and the front sprocket is 3/8" off-set and it doesn't need an out-board berring support plate. If you get it out further than that you need the berring support plate b/c there is just too much leverage being applied to the countershaft. I picked up a support plate and it's going on as soon as I can take the time to fit it. I'll need that b/c the wheels that are going on are big PMs and the rear is a 6 (or is it a 6.25...hmmm...can't remember).

Paul Musgrave is the 'guru' that has helped me thru most all of this. He studied under Kaz Yoshima in Florida when he was a kid and he turned me onto more 'voodoo' than I'll ever be able to apply. Anyway, I'm determined to get those huge PMs on it and when I do the sprocket will have to come out further, neccessitating the support plate. Paul said that the 5" wheel with the 3/8ths off-set is as far as a guy should go b/c of the torque-stress on the out-put shaft. He even said that when I beef the motor that I should go to the support plate because of the increase in stress.

I'm looking forward to it...the rear shock is going to be the next struggle. Once that's settled then the rear frame (might mod-on a late model sub-frame) and mount the 916 seat unit, then the pipe can be made...so, some done, some to do...now, where's that magic wand!

Oh, a couple more things: if you have a choice, go with ZX9R forks as opposed to the 7Rs b/c the 9s are 2.75" longer and it matters big time in ground clearence.
The 18" PMs are a weird deal; I've had 'em for a hundred years and was just getting ready to put 'em on the Z1R and my buddy (strange name for the scoundrel that talked me out of my precious '82 KZ750R1 / GPz750 that is painted like an ELR) made me promise to sell them to him. So, I threw a rediculous price at him and he said "Sold! hang on to 'em until I can get the cash to you!":pinch: ...somedays I should just stay in bed!
