1982 GPZ750 - New Owner

Welcome to the Forum and the GPz750R1 Club. These are great bikes. Mine is languishing but I hope to get back on it soon. 
What are your plans? If I were you, I'd start a search on eBay for 1982 Kawasaki GPz750 used parts. You won't know what you need until you start to tear into it. 

Thanks! I'm excited to be here. My plans for now are to start wrenching. Work though it with my boys and learn how to take it all apart, inspect it, and put it back together. If we can get it running, then we move on to restoration and upgrades. I have already started looking for a few bits on ebay and such. So I don't think I'll have too hard of a time with sourcing what I may need.

Welcome! You are probably the coolest dad ever. If you are interested, you could start a post in the projects section to document your progress and ask questions or share thoughts if you get stumped. Im sure you can get that thing running! I bet that would be very exciting for your kids.

Thanks! I sure try. I do plan to start a thread in the project section once I have some time go really get into it. I also want to try and document the process on my YT channel. If I end up doing so, I'll link the videos in my project thread. 
My kids have already been arguing about who gets first ride, and what color we might end up painting it when all is done. Had to slow their roll a bit and remind them that we are learning on this beauty and it might not be a runner in the end. And that this project will take a long time (promised my wife I will only use personal spending money on this project, to not ruin our budget).

If it were mine, I would:

Pull the tank.

Buy a new battery. install.

Get new plugs, install.

Buy a Motion Pro remote gas device and connect it to the carbs. Block off the vac line.

Get the freshest gas you can and set up the remote fuel tank.

Push it outside and then turn the gas on. It will probably leak fuel out of the float bowls until the gaskets fatten back up.

Push the button and see what happens.

I found a on/off fuel tap that mounts into a 1/2"(I think) hole drilled into a one gallon plastic gas can I had laying around. I found it in the lawnmower section at the hardware store for $5. It has a hose barb the right size for the fuel line. It was cheaper than the Motion Pro tank.

I lost my 400F in a fire. And a truck. I've learned not to jerry-rig stuff when it comes to fuel.

It's not jerry rigged, it's a Briggs and Stratton fuel tap for their plastic fuel tank.

That's funny.  You are telling the OP to put gas to this bike and see what happens.  No way in hell I'd do that.  Those carbs would come straight off for a full rebuild before hitting the starter button.

I took the bike out this morning for a good wash and was successful in getting the carbs off the motor. But I'll save all the juicy details for my project thread. 

You and I have essentially the same bike, (mine is the 83 KZ750-L3) and I'm currently getting mine back to a running condition here.  I've owned 2 other versions of these bikes long ago  (same one bought new, and the 84 KZ700-A1), and got pretty familiar with them, so if you have any issues, let me know.  I can list out all the parts I'm replacing and the sources I used, if you're interested too.

I'm certainly not as knowledgeable as some guys here, but back when I was riding those other 2 bikes, I had a good friend who had worked for a Kawasaki dealer teach me a LOT about the inline 4's.

I have the print version of the factory shop manual (which is nice because sometimes you need to check a few pages back-and-forth to find exactly what you need), and the complete parts diagrams, and am working through the process in what I believe is the best order.  I'm at the fuel stage, just checked the valves, and starting on brakes atm.
