1982 GPZ750 - New Owner

Greetings,
I recently picked up this lovely project with gobs of potential! This is my new-to-me (but not at all new) 1982 Kawasaki GPZ750R1. She has 27k miles on her. Previous owner stated she ran 10 years ago and was parked with a bit of a knocking noise in the engine. Under the seat, I found a receipt (pictured) from a carb rebuild back in 2007 when the bike had 26k miles on her. So in the last 20 years, she's gotten 1k miles. I don't have the keys, so that gets to be one of the first fixes.  I do know the battery is dead and am not sure if I want to try charging it or not. Probably will go with a new one to be safe.

Either way, the main reason I picked up this beauty. I love working on my own cars and such, and recently had my boys help me out and they had a great time. My boys are 9, 7, and 5. This bike is intended to be a learning platform for us to learn how to wrench on motorcycles. I figure, I spent all of $free.99 to bring her home, so worst case scenario I scrap the whole thing after we dig into it and figure out how it all works. Best case scenario, we get it back up and running, give it a fresh paint job, and we have a beautiful bike in the end.

I'll be sure to dig through the forums for as much info as I can. I've already found what I figure is one of the more specific manuals for this bike. I've even uploaded it to the filebase here. I've also included images of the VIN and engine number so that can be added to whatever data bases are stored here.

I'll also be starting a project thread and hope to be putting together a few videos of the process that I can put online. Do feel free to share any and all information you have regarding this classic beast.

If you do not already have a factory service manual, here is a digital copy. The 1982 specific stuff begins on page 287. All of the stuff pertaining to all the models is on the previous pages.

Cool project! That particular year and model is one of my favorite Kawasakis. Best of luck with it, and I look forward to seeing your restoration.

Nice find. If you can get the skidlid lock off there is a code stamped for the key on the inside
