Dyna s knock off

19 May 2025 06:13

I put electronic ignition on my 78 kz650. When I turn on the power it’s just full power to the coils….when I spin the motor there is no off/fire/off/fire it’s just lit up, I followed the directions, my connections are good, the coils that were on it are marked +/- but the new ones arnt, I’ve grounded the mounting surface of the coils, I’m lost, I’m not a novice, my battery is at 10v but am charging besides it would at least try to work if that were the problem, the gap between tha rotor and pickups is a bit wide b but I don’t see that causing the problem

You could start by supplying a drawing of how you have it hooked up. One side of the coils are supplied with 12vdc and the other side should be hooked up to the triggers. The right side trigger should be for 1 and 4 cylinders. Not sure what you mean by grounding the surface of the coils. What coils are you using. Not familiar with the 650 but the 900 coil mounts are very close to the coil connections (Dyna coils)and can short. On Dyna coils connections can be positive or negative. How are you checking timing. Should be static with small light bulb.

I can’t check timing, the light is on all the time, everything else is done as you say, I ordered a dyna s and am throwing the knock off away, 3 ohm coils (green)

Well i ordered a Dynatech ignition, as you said the gap for the pick ups is critical, im positive i have it right on my end, i could screw around making the gap correct but it is going in the trash, when i get the new ignition i will let you know how it turns out

You are all set with your approved first two posts
Welcome again
One last thing is you need to click the insert all tab when installing any pictures so they become full size
I have fixed them in both your threads so all good for now
Interesting setup on your  650 trike conversion

You cannot have constant voltage applied to the coil primaries.  The magnetic field created with alternating current does not occur with steady direct current.  The field is required to induce high voltage on the secondary side of the coils.  With direct current this is accomplished by switching the power on and off at the pickup.  Normally the voltage at the pickup is zero but it jumps briefly as the engine rotates a tiny magnet past the pickup.  Either your pickup is shorted or your connections at the coil are incorrect.

There should be a double brown spare connecter in your headlight.  It's a hot wire and the one I normally use to connect the red wire from the Dyna.  The other wires coming from the coils (red and yellow?) should be connected to their normal source.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I bought one of those Knock offs. The rotor is 3* off so it wouldn't work. I tried a old Dyna one and it works and still does. I ordered a new rotor from Dyna due to the old one being too sloppy. I'm running it now until the knock off dies. It's been close to a year now. Go figure. 🤔

BTW I connected the red wire to the Y/R going to the coils so it's controlled by the kill switch. Not good to have it on all the time.

I found one problem, my battery was smoked, it looks like it’s pregnant with twins…..it’s only 4 months old

As I keep saying with electrics - "check the basics before you throw money at it" hope the old ignition was faulty and you haven't spent the money with Dynatec for nothing   lots of guys here running the knock offs without issue !
PS: if a 4 month old battery is swollen like that you might want to check the vent is clear and also check the output of your charging system !
