Hello, new Z rider here . but a longtime enthusiast .
Just bought the Z900 in the picture to revive.
The core is solid, but she's been neglected for a while, so needs a thorough going through. First step is to free the brakes , next will inspect/ clean the carbs , change the fluids and get her running. At first I thought I'd have a lot of work with rusty parts but it seems I'm just in time and all she needs is a good cleanup.
Sadly the airbox is missing and all she has for filtration is the gauze over the bell mouths.
Can anyone help with ID'ing the carbs? Are these the standard 26 mm ? Thanks in advance.

Howdy. I don't know what carburetors they are, but I think maybe VM28s. ??? .... my identification cue is how the rock'em sock'em robot chins jut out over the intake ports.

Ah OK thank you. I was confused because of the large single nut on the underside.

Early Z1 VM 28 carbs. They're worth money. The KZ 900's came with VM 26's. May be able to sell the 28's and buy 26's with profit left over. The 28's are hard to keep in tune but otherwise are good carbs. Your choice. You can get a aftermarket airbox for a Z1 that will work well and a reasonable price. The first thing I would do is check the valve clearances.

I think I'll keep them. I also have a Z1B frame that I might use them for.
I originally went to look at this one as a donor for the '75, but it turned out to be far better than advertised.
I even have the original exhausts for it.
Even the fuel tank is clean & dry with no residue. Probably because it all leaked over the carbs.
A friend suggested dry ice blasting to clean it and move on from there. I'll give that go and report my experiences with it.

Hoi davido,
I'm in Den Haag. Thanks, I'll probably take you up on your offer, especially for the '75 build.
Maybe I'm a bit mad for working on two bikes at once but hey ...
I do need a good triple tree for it so if anyone knows of one I'd be interested.

The Z900 is fairly complete so it's more or less just cleaning and & tuning.
I haven't heard it run yet so I'm definitely curious if they got the fueling right for the combo of 4 into 1 exhaust and open carbs.

Not doing much with it until it's been seen by the RDW the week after next and they've given sign of approval.
