Re: Hello from Maryland!

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it, does anyone have a cover for their bike? I've owned this thing for less than 2 days, and it's already been rained on 4 times!
I have a motorcycle shell and a porch which it may find its way into, but they are on the back of my house, and it's way too soft to get the bike back there, so I'd like to cover it. I have a Dowco Guardian on my Vaquero, and would like to protect the 650 in the same way.
It looks like their cover for "Small/Medium Cruisers" may fit, but does anyone know for sure? TIA!

Welcome John. What part of Maryland? I'm down in the Southern tip (Calvert Co.). There's a few other Marylanders on here as well.
Looks like you found a very clean bike with just the normal stuff for a bike of that age. Some basic maintenance and you'll be enjoying many miles this summer.
I'm using the XL Dowco Guardians on my 900/1000's. They're a little big, but not significantly. A meduim may work, but I'd go with the large for your 650.

I'm up north of DC.
I'm pretty sure I have the XXL-sized cover for my Vaquero. Funny, I just found a page on Dowco's site (which didn't come up in search results earlier) which lists Medium for KZ440 and KZ750. No KZ650 listed, so I'll follow your advice and get the Large.
I love the Motorcycle Shell products (cycleshell.com), but have no interest in shelling [lol] out $500 right now for an enclosure, and I also don't have the space on my driveway. May have to line them all up off the driveway and kill some grass, haha.

The 440 and 750's were twins. The 650's are 4's, so I would say the large should be about right. My thoughts were that it may be a little baggy if it's to big, but it's useless if it's to small.

OK, I ordered a large Dowco Guardian weatherall cover last night, hopefully it gets here before the [expected] rain on Thursday. Amazon Prime says it'll be here Wednesday, so it'll be a busy evening of washing/covering the bike and mowing the grass
I plan to ride it around tomorrow - didn't have time this morning to let 'er warm up, so I took the Vaquero (yay for fuel injection).
While I'm on the subject, does anyone know if an electronic fuel injection system has been created for this bike? Also, do you need any specialty tools/knowledge to install the Dyna ignition? It'd be great to make this ol' gal just a little easier to live with on a daily basis, if possible.

Let the drama begin!
This morning, I went to start the bike, and it would start, but wouldn't stay running. On the 3rd try, I heard a pop and lost all lights. Battery tender says the battery is fully charged, so I'm guessing it's a blown fuse. Will try to work on it tonight or over the weekend and see what's what.
I also tried the kick starter on it, but after quite a few tries, I realized it just wasn't going to start. I noticed a puddle of gas under the bike too, so I'm guessing I flooded it. Mind you, I haven't had a vehicle this old in a *long* time, not since my first car (a 1966 Plymouth Fury III).
Oh well, that's why it's a toy, and not my main mode of transportation.

You are correct about the tank and seat. Here is a pic of mine, all stock and yours should look the same. I've got an extra SR seat I restored. If you are interested in looking at it PM me.

I have some sandpaper at home, and I bought some fuses today, so hopefully we get a break in the weather this weekend and I can clean the connectors and swap out fuses, see if I can get this bike running again

I'd be inclined to use Scotchbrite before I used sandpaper so as to avoid gouging the contact surfaces. There is also an excellent product that is a spray on called Deoxit that is a huge help for those hard to reach connector contacts.

Use Deoxit D5 NOT sandpaper on connectors. If you sand them you will remove the plating that retards or prevents corrosion. Deoxit will clean them and leave them ready for use. You can buy it at Radio Shack, Amazon, etc., etc. Ed

Thanks for that! I have a scotchbrite pad at home I will use for this, I think.
In the mean time, I will order DeOxit. I see it's a contact cleaner? Can I use anything NAPA sells? I'm headed there tomorrow for something else anyway.
Thanks,
-John
