Rockranch wrote: The MkII and ST engines appear the same externally, yet were much different internally in many ways also including their crankshafts, stators, cases etc etc etc...though they will mount right into most any other KZ1000 and even the earlier 900 frames all the way back to the '73's without any mounting mods. That's why the MKII motors are popularly sought after for big bore and drag racing engine builds for their beefier cranks and cases. The ST (shaft) engines are the same motor internally as the MKII's and can be converted to sprocket drive, as I found out with the one I recently bought...

Vroom-vroom!!!

Theres a whole hell of a lot more big inch turbo dragbikes out there running small pin cranks and old style cases than they ever made of the mkII versions. ;)

Then there's a hell of a lot of people out there that I've encountered either in person or via various online sites that have no idea what the hell they're talking about!. Go figure.

Count the number of big motored drag bikes and street bikes out there that have been built raced since before the mkII bikes came out.
Then look at how many mkII motors that were built,Theyre a small percentage of the bikes that have been built/still raced .
Theres nothing wrong with the mkII parts theyre tough as hell,But if things arent put together right theyll blow apart just like any other motor.
And yes Ive had 5-6 of the 1980 1000 ltds over the years.

I didn't say the MOST...obviously there would not be enough to go around lmao. NO engines are bulletproof when in the hands of speed-clock racing fanatics!

I'm just saying that the mkIi is not as all mighty as some people want to make it out to be is all.
Take it for what ever it's worth, but if I was building a non turbo street track bike I'd use a 900 crank myself.
If I was building anot her turbo street bike I wouldn't have a problem using a small pin kz1000 crank that had been checked out and welded.
I know of a local 79 Ltd with the old style small crank that's been built into a high boost 1197 turbo that has never had any bottom end issues,Joe's motor puts well over 200 plus hp at the back wheel.

ltd's didn't get leading axle forks until 81.

there are also external differences in the mk11 blocks and the small pin kz blocks.

Extra ribs on the cases by oil fill hole area is the most obvious differance to look for.

I thought he just wanted to know if there was an engine difference between the 1980 KZ1000 and 1980 KZ1000 LTD?
Seems like everyone has gone all over the place!! LOL
