Hello From Scenic New Jersey
02 Jan 2016 13:27
Hello everyone, love the board already as it was very helpful in providing a bit of info on the bike I just bought. Proud new owner of a 1982 LTD550 with less than 6,000 miles on it. It seems to be almost all original and in good shape, mechanically anyway. It could use a deep clean and polish and definitely new tires, but I'm looking forward to getting it into good shape over the next few winter months.
I'm also brand new to riding and motorcycle maintenance, so any advice (general or bike specific) would be very welcome. I plan on taking the MSF course as soon as I can in February, and won't ride until then. The only improvements I've really considered so far are new tires, a luggage rack if I can find one anywhere, and handlebars that are a more standard shape than the very cruiser-ish ones that come stock. I plan on doing mostly commuter and city riding for the most part. Once again, thanks for this great forum!

Welcome, yeah slightly lower bars would be more comfortable. Sit up and beg gets tiring on the back after a while. Nice bike.

Welcome aboard
the 1st thing you should get, is a Kawasaki service/workshop manual, for your specific yr. & model bike, it will have all of the scheduled maintenance procedures, & any trouble shooting you might have
don't waste your money on a Clymers or a Haynes manual

Thanks for the advice Pete, any idea where I could lay my hands on one? The only service manual I saw on eBay was in New Zealand and would cost over 70 bucks shipped. The guy I bought the bike off of threw in a Clymer manual for free along with a sissy bar and a free other pieces. I was thinking that would be enough, but I'm all for picking up a factory one. Thanks again for the advice!
