Hello all. I am new to your site. I need some help. If anyone can tell me what year this motor is or any info on it will be greatly appreciated. I am trying to get a service manual so I can set the timing. Thank you

Wow man. You want us to ID the engine based off that photo?

MY original bike is a 1981 KZ550. This new motor mounted to my frame everything lined up but the air intake and exhaust was much larger than my '81.

What letter model? In 1981 there was the A2, C2, and D1. The A2 and C2 models used KZ550Axxxxxxx motor cases. The D1 used KZ550Dxxxxxxx motor cases.
I believe all Gpz550's were KZ550Dxxxxxxx motor cases. That means it should have oil cooler hookups on the oil pan.
There are three types of Gpz 550 motors:
1981 Kz550 D1
1982-83 Kz550 H1-H2
1983-86 Zx550 A1-A4
They should all have the same size and spacing on exhaust ports.
The intake for the D1 was the smallest using Tk22 carbs.
The H1-H2 intakes were much bigger using Tk26 carbs.
The A1-A4 intakes were slightly bigger than the H models, and used Tk27 carbs.
All carb spacing was the same across all KZ/ZX 550 models, but the bolt spacing was different for the carb holders on the early model, You can get new intake rubbers and slot the bolt holes to mount them to the new engine in order to use the old TK22 carbs, or you can try and get some Tk26 or Tk27 carbs (the 26 and 27 carbs are different from each other internally, but can pretty much swap for each other). But the old airbox won't fit the 26/27 carbs, and the newer airbox won't fit the older frame, so you'd probably have to jet them for pods or makeshift something. If you stick with Tk22 carbs, I have a website dedicated to them in my sig.
There are many manuals in my signature, along with valve timing notes. You should read the valve-train warning before doing any work.

Welcome. If it's a GPZ engine, that's a good thing?
