Hello from MD!
07 Aug 2015 16:56
Hey all at KZR! I've lurked for a while, waiting for the right bike to come along. I happened to be babbling about my search to a friend... turns out his brother has had one sitting in the garage for 15 years! We worked out a deal and now she's mine! From what I gather it's a 1980 A4. I was hoping for something in worse condition to cafe, but this one is a bit too nice to ruin. I'm thinking the furthest I'll go is a handlebar change and some pod filters. Carb, jet, master cylinder, and caliper kits are on the way from Z1E (front brakes don't function). It ran (extremely rich), but leaks fuel and the front brakes don't work.
I do have a question about fitting clubmans behind the fairing, but I'll save it for the proper tech forum.
Thanks for reading. Pic is attached. Sorry my fat ass is in the way of the bike

Welcome mattyboh.
Nice KZ1000 you've found yourself.
A MKII if I'm not mistaken?

Not sure I'd go Clubman bars on a MKII, I have them on my KZ650, but the fairing I installed on her necessitated the handle bar change to Clubmans.
Maybe a flat Superbike bar, or one with a slight 1~2 inch raise.

Welcome. In 75 mine seemed so big. Now it seems small. I dress out to 165 then, now I'm over 200.

Welcome Mattyboh, very nice ride you found yourself. Nice fairing as and nice original Kerker header as well. Bike is genuine old school. Can't advise on how the clubman will fit/look. Only need to make sure that any handle bars you install does not hit the tank at full turn, lock to lock. Wouldn't want to hurt that nice tank.

Thanks, all!
Nick, I wasn't sure if the 1980 models still counted as MKIIs or if the 1979 models were the only ones. These were all built before I was born, so I'm still learning the nuances and nomenclature associated with KZ1000s.
Steve, I'm hanging just shy of 200. I topped out at 265! This thing is a paperweight compared to my Harley. I love it!
Thanks for the advice, Joe. I had heard the fat tanks on 1000s didn't always play nice with aftermarket handlebars. I'll be sure to check carefully at full lock with whichever bars I buy.

Superbike bars and leave it at that. Clubmans for another bike that you cafe. I wouldn't even do straight bars in this bike as it's possible they won't clear, lock to lock, the tank. Sweet assed ride for sure. Get some good KN pod filters and if you can score a set of 29's for cheap AWESOME, if not fit a set of 29CR's to it. Those carbs can be found cheap or you can buy new for the same cost of an expensive set of 29's. Those bikes are getting rare and fetch a pretty penny from the Asians who want them back in their country. Talk to trianglelaguna, he had one. He can tell you about his love affair.
