1980 750ltd cafe project
19 Jun 2015 20:20 - 19 Jun 2015 20:42
Hello there,
Just finished a 750ltd cafe project, well I don't know if a guy is ever finished but i'm happy how it sits right now. If I were going to do anymore I might swap out the guages to just 1 small version or none at all. Anyway, everything is stock except the seat and little things like lights. Anything else is just modified or cut or something. No performance mods or anything, it was only about trying to make it look cool. Although the rear shock did seem to help the rear considerably. This is the first Kaw i've had, for a $600 bike and a few hundred in parts/seat it was a really fun project.
Thanks

How is it you only have one shock on the bike. Did I miss something there. And did you relocate the top mount. How does that work ? Nice lookin bike.

It works, only the 1 shock on the right side. Relocated top mount, reinforced the swing arm. Its a shock off the rear skid frame of a newer snowmobile actually, something like a 440lb spring rate.

Did you make that seat? If not where did you get it?

My dad was an upolsterer back in the day, he did the foam and cover it self. I made the pan. Partially out of the 2 piece seat that was on it originally but if I were to do it again I would start from scratch and ditch the original seat/pan all together. By the time you cut it down, narrow it up and shape it how you want it turned into a pita. I still wanted it to hinge like it did originally but that didn't work out in the end anyway.

Looks good, nice job on the modifications!
So the old Rocker gets out his bike to make a ton before he takes his leave. Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
just like it used to be. And as he flies --- tears in his eyes ---
his wind-whipped words echo the final take and he hits the trunk road doing around 120 with no room left to brake.

Looks sweet, some KZ cafes look a bit OTT, but i like the way you've kept the bikes original looks and just improved on them. Positioning of the rear shock looks better too.
How'd you fix the seat using the original pan if not using the hinge mounts? They stick out a bit, can understand you not being able to use them. Also how did you mount the fabric to the seat pan? Was going to do something similar on my KZ but wasnt sure what a decent fixing for the seat cover would be.

The cover is attached on there like it would be from the factory, with the pointy bend over steel things. I put a hole in the side of the cover already, so it has some duct tape to boot now, lol. I made 4 little L shaped brackets to attach to the frame. They're screwed into the pan with self tapping screws, very short ones mind you, and then into the frame with bolts where I welded on some shaped 1/8 flat steel to eliminate the big dip in the middle. You might be able to make them out in a pic or 2.
Thanks for the nice comments, I've been really busy with stuff lately, I'll try and get some close ups of some of the things soon.
