Thanks for having me
14 Jun 2015 12:52
Hi, my name is Renzo,
I'm 33 years old and live in Antwerp Belgium.
i just bought me a Kawasaki 1100 LTD a week ago. (look picture)
Today i strarted disassembling the bike and found out the gastank is full of rust.
I went online to find answers and found this forum while doing that.
I am now looking to find me a good gastank for my bike and maybe i can find it here.
Maybe in the future i will also have more questions and i hope to find help here so i can keep on (re)building this bike myself, with the help of some skilled and experienced Kawasaki lovers and technicians.
Thank you and have a nice morning/day/evening/night or whatever!
Friendly regards

A few places worth knowing about for parts a bit closer to home;
www.jaakszedshop.be/contactme.html
www.classickawaparts.nl/
www.motorsloop.be/nl/onderdelen/mke=Kawasaki/mdl=KZ%201100/
www.motorparts.nl/index.php?main_page=in...r7u9tk64636qbnbk60i5
www.motorparts.nl/index.php?main_page=in...r7u9tk64636qbnbk60i5
And if your tank is salvagable, one of my local bike shops does a tank lining service
www.101motoren.com/
Also usefull is
www.marktplaats.nl/c/motoren/c678.html
This isnt an advert and Im not associated with any of these places (except 101motoren.Tell Klaas I said hello and he did a great job on my sprocket carrier) Im also not recommending anyone (except 101motoren). Its just a list of places Ive found in and around the Netherlands.
You might have luck finding what you need and it should be cheaper than having to ship it over from America. Or not.
Good luck with your bike.

Buy five pounds of Oxalic acid powder crystals.
Mix about a cup and a half of it with 3-4 gallons of water.
Empty the gas out of your tank....completely.
Pour in the mixed acid fill it as far as you can.
Shake the water around frequently in the first few hours and let it sit for 8 hours or so.
Drain it all out into a big tub with a filter to catch the crap....and then do it all over again with the same mixture.
Because Oxalic acid really only combines with ferrous oxide, the green junk you pour out will be the rust and a weaker solution of acid.
You might have to mix a new batch the third time but a 5lb bag is enough to do two or three rusty tanks.
I've done this a few times over the years and am amazed at how much rust this take out and you do nothing but sit and wait.
Now, it f it is very rusty, especially in the welded folds/seams in the bottom, you can eat right through it and have a leak!!
So be prepared for that if the tank is really bad.
When done, wash it out with a mixture of 2 gallons of water with a +1/4lb of baking soda to stop the acid reaction.
A couple times should be enough.
Then rinse with clean water and try to use an air compressor hose to dry the tank as soon as you can... it will rust quickly now.
When drier that day, use a mixture of cheap 2 stroke oil and cheap gasoline (actually any oil.. at about 15:1 is good enough)... used to wash the inside of the tank and coat it with some oily gas to keep it from rusting.
Now, never let the tank go empty for very long again or it will rust.

Missionkz,That sounds like a very complex way of derusting a tank.Try this;
Clean out all the fuel,Fill with brown vinegar.Leave for 2 weeks. Empty out and rinse with soda.
Bobs you uncle and fannys your aunt!

I used an old chain ratteld aroun the empty tank, followed by water rinse, then phosphoric acid and water mix, followed by a tank sealant. It worked but i think it could be better. I think mission's chemistry skills might be better.

Welcome, I used a handful of square nuts and the acid solution plugging the fuel cap with a cork, removing and blocking off the petcock, violently shaking the tank several times letting it sit dumping and repeating until no more rust flakes came out.
Mine was a 250ltd so not a big tank but it seems to have worked. I also run a good in-line filter on the bike as well.
Good luck!!

So the old Rocker gets out his bike to make a ton before he takes his leave. Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
just like it used to be. And as he flies --- tears in his eyes ---
his wind-whipped words echo the final take and he hits the trunk road doing around 120 with no room left to brake.

I thought about strapping it in my mixer. Didn't do it in case it came loose, then what would I have? :woohoo:
