Didn't the old ex250 and ex500s have a mono shock?
I would think they would be a reasonably close fit dimensionally wise ,and the bikes probably weighed close to same.

10 Apr 2013 15:43Oh God,you had to bring stewie back up! I offered to give him another frame to fix that mess if he promised not to try mono shocking it again, that was before he went off deep end for 9-10th time! :woohoo:650ed wrote: It's just that I have seen the precision engineering of some of the "custom bike builders" who are under the delusion that that can create a better bike as long as they have some welding equipment. I'm not saying this is your approach, as that remains to be seen, but here is just one example of someone who cut a perfectly good frame and then fixed it with their welder. I would not want to ride on that puppy.

There have been so many like Stewie's. Two of my favorites (shudder!) are below because they started with bikes like mine. Guys who knew for sure they could out-engineer the dummies at Kawasaki (who have tons of engineering education and experience) as long as they played it by ear and didn't put together a plan before firing up the good ole sawzall. I don't wish bad luck on anyone, but the bikes I've seen that have been successfully modified and actually ridden are normally the result of a lot of hard work and careful planning. There are some very nice examples on this site, but not as many as those that end up being parts bikes. Ed
Here's one that started with a really cherry KZ650-C1 - except for 4 into 1 exhaust it was all original (including paint). Here's the last we saw of his Suzukimobile before he faded away. Why destroy every piece of the bike he bought if he wasn't going to use any of it? Did he toss it or finish it; I guess we'll never know for sure:
kzrider.com/forum/11-projects/451145-str...=20&start=200#539129
And then of course there's the water-cooled Sukuzisaki KZ650-C1. Gosh, it's really hard to believe this one failed:

What worries me about the direct acting shock idea is that the 400 probably weighs in the neighborhood of 350-400lbs,fitting the direct acting shock from a shock that weighs closer to 500 plus might make it tough to get a decent ride without spending money on an expensive shock with more adjustment to it.
Its all just speculation on m
y part of course until you take a tape measure and do a little research

a spring change can make the shock handle the weight.

Again thanks for the help, definitely intend to research the hell out of the direct action shock. Like I said, I'm in no way looking to reinvent the wheel here. I'm just updating the suspension. This technology has been around since at least the eighties. That ex250 set up uses a linkage and I'm hoping to avoid that if I can.
