new member from the dirty south
06 Mar 2013 00:26
Figured I'd setup a profile since I will be popping in often. Last year I picked up a 84 GPZ 750 in a straight trade. Bike turned over but needs a lot of TLC. Tank was rusted through (picked up another in better shape) . All the bearings need replacing in the frame and suspension needs overhauling. V&H header had a damaged flange on cyl 1, stud needs replacement too. Yada yada yada lots of work ahead for this project. The end goal is to get her running strong to run in the V5 class in WERA. Project will be slow going till I get a house with a garage hopefully later this year to do a real tear down. I'll start a project page once things move forward a bit more. Anyways I am glad there seems to be plenty of people here with experience on these bikes.
I have a ZR7 rear coil over to replace the stock air shock ordered (understanding that fitment shouldn't be an issue but what do I Know)
And a 2002 ZR7 exhaust ordered to replace the damaged V&H system, stock howitzer muffler will need to go though.
Plans are to eliminate the anti dive up front with blocking plates and go with progressive springs.
Just one problem after another it seems.

This bike will be stripped down to the frame and gone through part by part. I'm just praying the top end is good when I finally get around to tearing into the motor. Right now she is just collecting dust till I can get some space to really get started. Lord knows when and if the valve adjustment has been done, around 29,000 on the odometer. Trust me even if the motor ran right now I wouldn't ride it, I have faith she can be brought back to life though.
Safety and reliability are of more concern to me than power mods at the present. The baffles in that pos V&H pipe were already removed, ( running without baffles I always assumed was a bad idea if you wanted low and mid range power).

We use to check and adjust the valves after the break in period and they should still be good with that kind of mileage, my guess.
Not sure about anything else though.
Welcome aboard.

Thanks, I'll check his build posts. Good to know about the valve adjustment. Engine really only seems to be leaking from the shifter shaft seal in the mission cover (easy fix from what I've seen).
Im praying that as long as regular maint has been kept up regarding motor inside should be okay, I am worried how long the previous owner ran with that damaged header flange, bad bad move. But he claimed the carbs were cleaned and rejetted when I picked it up so it didn't seem like he had ran it on the street long. Especially the way that tank was (you could poke a hole through with your finger lol)

Lots of work done, all new bearing front and rear, newer tank in better shape that doesn't leak. Fork seals replaced and added progressive springs and fork oil. Added new spark plug wires. Decided to stuff and airbox back in since I'm sticking with the CV carbs right now (yeah they suck but as long as they work at the moment). Zr7 exhaust with new gaskets. No leaks after I fixed the broken shifter boss that had cracked off the inner case due to a previous fall. Brakes are next.

The build out is looking good!
Always liked those GPzs.
BTW, are those garage roomies a Buell Blast and some other FXL_ _ type?

have you pushed the fxdb hard enough in the corners to find the rear steer effect  ?
running into corners above 95mph or so my 04 road king would wobble so bad it would almost shake you off.
my cousin had an 06 street bob that he lost control of and ran out of a corner and clipped a highway side endo'd and died .
glide-pro makes a chassis stabilizer kit that i bought and cured my handling issues on the road king.
not tryin to harp, just trying to pass on my experience.
i also have a buell blast i have built a custom frame and am in the process of finishing up.
keep us posted,

I think I know what your talking about where the rear end is kind of disconnected ( sliding feeling). I dont push the Harley hard. Its weird I have a love hate relationship with the Dyna but what I do love about her is jumping on the bike and heading to the Beach etc.. there is something primal about those low tech pushrod bikes.
Im going to have to pull the carbs off the GPZ gain and go through them. Choke isnt working ( can only start without choke). And revs are hanging though that could be due to carbs out of synch.
