N00b from OKC
05 Sep 2007 13:06
I have owned my bike since 1987. It is a 75 Z1 900. It has not been running in over 15 years. It has sit in my garage while family, children, and career came first. Last weekend I decided to pull it out of mothball. Pulled the carbs as they were all gummed up, the tank is rusted, and the brakes were locked up. The engine turns over without any problems and I have purchased a new battery. I have my work cut out for me but feel certain in a bit I will have her up and running again.
Thanks to OKC_Kent for referring me to the board.

I am not sure what happened. I suck at the interweb. When I tried to attach the image, it kept giving me an error. :pinch:

Great news, I fired her up for the first time tonight. Was smoking a bit at first so only let her warm up and then shut it off. Started it up again later and wasn't as much smoke. I am very happy after sitting for 15+ years. I am still going to do a compression check later this week. Also have to fix the front caliper and get a new set of tires before I go tearing around on it.

Welcome to the site and nice bike!
You're in good Okie company!
I've heard that with that bike your chances are good of everything seating in good and being a good bike.
If you get it up, just gather you guys up and come up to Sapulpa for breakfast. My treat!

Anyone have an idea of how long it should take to see if the smoking problem will take care of itself or what method I should use to do this? Start up the bike and let it idle up to operating temp and shut of - repeat several times? Or should I let it warm up and then run it at high rpms?
I may just meet up with OKC_Kent and take you up on that offer when I get her up and running good.

Dang! I was just up in Bristow a few weeks ago with a bud, we turned north on 48 and rode a loop to Hominy, over Skiatook Lake, north on 11, south on 99, then west into Pawnee, over to Perry and south on 35 back to OKC. I never thought to check to see who lives around there, we could have rode together and had a great ride. We were looking for real backroads too, and I bet you know some of them around there! It was some of the better country I've seen in OK too. We want to do it again in the fall when the leaves turn. I'll be in touch for sure.
