I was having a hard time picturing my bike in different colors so I put together a 1/12 model and have been painting that. Here it is in a blue/green/purple color shifting paint. Color changes depending on viewing angle. What do you think?

Not sure about these days but when those color shifting paints hit the market they were crazy expensive. Almost impossible to repair too without a complete respray.

Prices seem to have come way down. You can buy 10g of pigment (more than enough to paint a bike at 1-2% pigment by weight) for $12 these days. This is the stuff I used - check out the video. Really beautiful effect.

You're probably right about needing a full respray if there's damage, but that's often true of any multi-stage paint job. My bike originally came with a red candy which has been very difficult to match.

I think it looks awesome. When I was a kid I stripped down my bicycle and painted it with that stuff. I used rattle cans (and wasn't very good) but it still looked pretty cool, or at least I thought so. I think I still have that bike in the basement somewhere.

Only problem was that when it's dark, it looked black, which is cool if you are into that, but bad if you want to be more visible.

The way I did minor paint repair was to just touch it up in the lightest color that it will appear to be in full lighting. When the sun isn't shining on it, the paint's color difference will be less noticeable, since it will be less illuminated.

personally i think the color changing paints are a bit gimmicky and dated at this point. I think of "sex spec" cars from the early 2000s - ala fast and the furious. But hey thats my .02. you do you.

I'm thinking about doing the stripes on my black kz with it.
I have seen clean tasteful paint jobs with it but most look dated and cheesy

If you like it, that is all that matters.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

Excellent job on the model. The first photo had me fooled until I read your description. I was confused by the giant plywood flooring panels. :)

I thought it was a real bike with a awesome floor at first too.
I have that model, I have been trying to decide if I want to build it or not.
Check out custom paints.com, I was in the showroom drooling over all the colors samples yesterday
