In case OP is still contemplating this, I am doing the same thing on an 81 KZ1000K frame. My tail came from a KZ650 off ebay, and as mentioned I had to add some mounting brackets while working on my frame. I don't really have a clear picture of the brackets but you can see them here, in between the fender mounts. It was simply made from some scrap steel, bent into a square U shape and then I tapped screw holes before welding them in place.

When mounted the tail sits like this. I had to trim some material out of the back inside corners of the center to clear the larger fender bracket so the tail could rest cleanly against the frame.

This shot gives you a good idea of the final resting angle of the tail:

Now keep in mind that to complete this project you have to build a custom seat to clear the tail. I couldn't find any clear information on older seats that would fit the 80's frames, but you might be able to modify the hinges on an existing seat? I wanted to build my own design anyway so I've been watching ebay and managed to get a clean seat pan just this week. I have a lot of other things to finish up on my bike over the Summer but I'm hoping to start building the new seat next Winter. I'm not a fan of the big clunky stock taillight but that one pictured above by Scirocco looks like it would also fit nicely in the tail I have so I think I'll grab one of those and start planning for how to mount it.

She's a beautiful mess, and I've made her all mine
