Applying decal sets (76 KZ900)

I just received the decal sets from Z1 Parts Inc. for my 76 KZ900. They didn’t come with any application instructions and when I emailed them; they said they didn’t have any.

I found some instructions on-line, but they talk about water and dish soap. I’m not sure, but I don’t think these are a wet application type decal? They have an adhesive on the back of the decal. It kinda looks like they press on and the top clear layer of plastic pulls away; but that is just a guess.

Any tips on how to align the ends that need to butt together perfectly? (Shown in pic) I wonder if they are made to overlap and then trim the joint?

Thinking on going back to the 75 Z1 scheme. $95 OUCH. Z1E has instructions.

That looks like a peel and stick decal, not a water transfer type. The soap and water is so you can reposition if it did not go on in the right place, and also helps working the air bubbles out. You also need to first trim away backer and clear from the sheet so there is only 1/4" left on each side of the stripe. The original stripes did overlap a little, when you lay them out to check fit you might find a long overlap and it would be better to cut off anything longer than 1/2".

I bought a set of those for mine, but the painter couldn't make them work at all, so he just painted the stripes on. :woohoo:

Are you saying you can use water with the peel stick kind?

I was thinking I would have to use a razor blade to cut the butt joints, but you just overlap them a little?

I'd overlap and make one cut then peel off the excess.

Yes mix a drop of soap in a spray bottle half full of water and mist it onto the tank, then lay down decals.

Do you put them on the basecoat or do you clear, put them on and then more clear?

I put a coat of non-catalyzed clear over the basecoat, and catalyzed clear over the stripes.
