Clear urethane would be my first choice to protect the metal, failing that some Wizard's Power Seal would be a reasonable option. wizardsproducts.com/motorcycle-power-seal-8-oz/

I bought the two covers in the pic in 87. It is lifting in a couple places but new ones are cheaper if not the same price as having them plated. Besides, stock ones don't have fins. :P

slightly off topic, but check these sprocket carriers as I found one badly cracked on my 1000R,

I don't think chroming alloy is stupid.

These have been on my 76 LTD 900 since 76, & still look like new, no peeling or cracking, Its too bad the EPA has screwed up the chroming business with all their regulations, chrome doesn't last like it used to

You might just have something there, I've noticed old chrome lasts better than new..1970's classic cars for example. Also a warmer less rainy climate than cloudy old UK might have something to do with it.

I wanted it done myself, but the platers I spoke to talked me out of it. It was like "we'll do it, but no warranty".

Proper triple plate chrome involves deadly dangerous Cyanide Salts , nanny state some may say....the last three in my area were shut down by the authorities for tipping Cyanide salts it down the drain into our water supply. I did quite a lot of research on this as a business.

1980 Gpz550 D1, 1981 GPz550 D1. 1982 GPz750R1. 1983 z1000R R2. all four aces
