Use of the stock seat pan and fiberglass over it?

I opted for the fiberglass work over the tank option. A little lighter, and I already had materials in the garage. Doing a little more work today.

Okay. I looks little rough due the fact I had a family emergency in the middle of laying the cloth over the pan.

Laid the cloth down to reenforce the pan. Today I laid the front "lip" of the pan against the tank so the seat will curve upwards when upholstered. Used some mat and cloth.

Nice job. I used fiberglass to make my cowl, it's tedious but yours is starting to take shape nicely. :)

I am in the same process of modifying my seat. I am cutting it way down and chopping the rear frame. My question is, what did you use to shape your foam? I have found a razor blade is okay, but tears and leaves a jagged edge for the fine tuning.

What did you use?

I didn't cut my pan down at all. I did take about 6 inches out of my frame though.

I didn't use foam to mold my cowl, scroll back up and take a look at the other pics and you'll see how I used the back end of the tank to mold my cowl. The pic attached here is as it sits now. Finally laying the glass on the front seat portion. Getting close to finishing this thing if the weather would cooperate and stay a little warmer.

Hey SlimJim...the best tool for shaping foam is an old (or new, if your wife is cool!) electric carving knife....cuts like butter! For finer tuning of the foam surface, use a sander.

Well here we go, the final overall shape. Still has a few low spots to sand, then ready for body filler. Should just need a skim coat, sand, final coat, sand. This has been a great learning process but I'm pleased with the overall result.

Medicontheloose, this is what i am getting ready to do with my bike, right after i get it to run. I like the idea of using the back half of the tank to form the tail section. I will be following your writeup for reference.

Thanks bonneman. It's been a learning process. The compound curves, closing in the bottom, blending all the edges, etc. I want the cowl to appear as if it came with the bike when it's all said and done. The issues I have with some of the aftermarket is they look like an after thought. Harsh lines, etc. hopefully when mine is done, it looks like it belongs there.
