USD Forks

Hello, I have an 82 GPZ 750 that I want to put GSXR 750 forks on and was wondering if I can keep the stock wheel?

Not a straight swap but anything can be made to fit anything else if you have the correct tools.
Spindle size/wheel bearing size, wheel spacers, disc/caliper mounts and spacing along with speedo drive and larger wheel diameter to mudguard distance are the main points that will need addressing.
Access to a machine shop will make things easier.

It'll fit if you spent time and money. BUT!

Our front wheel is 19 incher and narrow. Very narrow by today's standard. Gixer have much wider wheel, specially from USD forks. Also, if I'm not mistaken, USD fork equipped Gixers have 17 up front (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Diameter may not be that bad, but the narrow front rim gonna look funny IMO. Also, another thing to consider is the front brake. I really doubt stock brake setup will work. You probably need to get bigger disks or get the custom caliper brackets. 

Lotta work there to keep the stock wheel.

 Those forks are just the ticket!

I had a similar project a couple of years ago upgrading from 37 mm OEM forks to RWU GSXR forks and keeping my "original" wheel. It's "doable" but perseverance is a must

Here's the begining. 

Think you could get some measurements off those forks? I've been thinking about using a similar era Showa fork for my bike.

Fascinating! So it looks like you measured everything out, and drew it to scale then you were able to calculate the difference in rake/trail right? Very interesting. 

That’s been one of my major concerns is making sure I don’t ruin the handling of the bike. 

Mostly what I meant was if you had measurements for like the stanchion diameter, overall length, axle diameter, etc. But this maybe even more helpful, so thank you. 

Started thinking again about how to fit USD forks on my bike. Took the advice/suggestion of B-K-Mod and started drawing dimensions out full scale. Haven’t gotten very far in that yet, mostly due to time restraints but also because I think one of my measurements is off, and I’m not sure which. More on that later, I’m sure. 

But I also had this thought about how I have been obsessing over finding just the right set of forks. Like as if there is a unicorn set that would make the swap plug and play. But it just seems like that’s never gonna happen, so I asked myself well if I’m going to have to have a custom axle, and maybe custom triple trees made regardless, what forks do I really want on there? Like basically what forks do I think look the coolest? And then also, what kind of cost am I looking at if I open up the search like that? 

Now, I would love to have been able to just plop down some cash on some brand new Öhlins or Showa forks, but I don’t have that kind of money. Especially when we are talking about an experiment that might not even work out. So I just kind of started browsing around eBay at used forks. First, I was pleasantly surprised that some of the prices were pretty cheap. Then somehow my search started coming back around to the same year/make/model over and over: the ‘03-‘04 Kawi ZX6R. 

As luck would have it, a good looking pair in my price range was listed for sale by my local salvage yard, so I walked over and saw them in person. Offered to pay cash and saved even more money. So for $200 out the door I’ve now got a complete ‘03 ZX6R front end to mess around with.
