I was wondering if it’s possible to install helicoil instead of using nuts, the orginal threads is broken...?


1981 KZ650-D4, with 1981 z750L engine (Wiensco 810 big bore).

It is possible however you need to use a coil which is shorter than the metal thickness and only drill and thread sufficiently deep so as to leave a smaller and unthreaded section at the top. The reason being if you drill/mill and thread right through there will be nothing to stop the helicoil threading out the top as you screw the bolts in. Once partially out the top you won't be able to screww the helicoil back in.
I would also use thread lock on the helicoil but not on the bolts.

Is there any reason you can't tap it a size larger and use a larger bolt? Helicoils are only needed if you must keep the same thread size, otherwise it's just more work and money.

A 5mmx.08 Timesert would be really good in that application, however not cheap.

I'd helicoil. It's pretty easy to do with a kit. We are lucky here in the US because you can buy a full kit that includes drill, tap, installation tool, tang breaking tool, and a pile of inserts for dead cheap off Amazon. I recently bought a kit and was very pleased with the quality. Installing inserts properly has a learning curve so you may want to practice on some scrap part before going at the carb bodies.

I much prefer the TimeSerts (factory approved repair BTW) over Helicoils. A properly installed TimeSert is actually better than the original aluminum threaded hole in some respects. I don't think you can say that about a Helicoil repaired hole. Just my opinion, but I repaired a lot of F-Ups at the plant in 43 years. It looks to me like the holes in the carb bodies pictured are already over 5mm, so retapping is not an option.

Helicoil, time insert and increase to M5.

So maybe the best and safest alternative is to go up to M5 then, there is enough material to do it?
