I just picked up a 2000 KZ1000 Police bike and the rear suspension feels horrible, bottoms out easily, etc. I’m a big dude and planning on carrying some cargo on longer hauls so I think it is definitely worthwhile to replace the rear suspension. Suggestions on the best path to take? The stock shock/spring combo appears to cost about $1,100 for the pair, hoping to spend far less than that :)

I have heard of Harley guys running corvette air shocks. You can pump them up with a hand pump if you need more height...
I actually run a pair in an old Triumph sports car.

Contact Restocycles. There is a linked icon near the top of this page. They sell Ikon (Koni) shocks and can likely set up a pair to suite your specific needs. I suspect Hagon and Progressive will do the same.
You could check with Bitubo, but they will likely be above $1,100. Ohlins definitely more.

For fork springs, Sonic and Progressive are popular choices.
No matter which way you go, contact the company and tell them what you need. Most will be happy to accommodate you if they can.
Honestly, most anything will be better than worn out 20 year old bits. Be very wary about Chinese parts. A few are ok, most seem to be junk. Some downright dangerous.
