Got my refund from z1partsinc.net. They're Aces in my book. I ordered a pair of new dust boots to replace the NOS ones I overpaid for from someone else. They started cracking within the first year. That's why I don't buy NOS rubber parts anymore.

While comparing the two face plates from a 1000 to the 650 it looks like the number spaces are closer together on the 1000's. That being the case if it is off it couldn't be that much. I only paid $21.80 delivered so it is worth a shot. It will be here today. :woohoo:

I got the 650 speedo. It's in rough shape. One screw was sitting at the bottom of the face plate and it had been opened. I knew about the screw and suspected it had been. Before I opened it I used my VS drill to see if it would work. Slowly raising the RPM's the needle moved up with no wag but then it started squealing. I took my Zoom spout oiler and oiled the drive. I let it soak and turned it upside down until the oil worked it's way in then tried it again. The needle is steady and no noise. :cheer: Whoever opened it did a lousy job. I tried to put the screw back in but it wouldn't fit. I used one from a junk one and it fit easy. :) OK, so I oiled the inside of the drive and it is soaking now. Looks great inside. B) The trick will be getting the needle off without damaging the shaft. I plan to cover the face with foil, heat the needle with my heat gun, then try to pry off the needle. :S I don't care about the faceplate as I will be switching it but if I mung up the shaft, Game Over. :( I'll do it in the morning when I'm fresh.

Do you use the two teaspoon method to pop the needle off??

I use to until I broke one shaft then I'd twist it off on other ones. I'll try to be more careful this time.

Made the switch. Now to see if it's calibrated right.
Steve

BTW, I tested both speedos with my drill. At full speed they both read 40 MPH. I'm thinking the drives at the wheel may be different.

About 100 miles on the HWY and then needle has steadied out. If it is fast it's not by much. Next is the Tach. B)

I'm not sure if I should move the spindle back or forward for more spring pressure.
