Fixing a weak starter was created by TheForumTroll
Hello experts!

So I recently took my '83 KZ700A1 out of storage and need to fix its very weak starter before using it and I was hoping someone could give me some hints..

I have pulled the cables from the battery (they look fine in both ends) and swapped the battery out with a new one but that made no difference. It is still very weak and can only start once or twice on a full battery (still plenty of power left if measured). I fixed the poor start of the old Suzuki GS450S by ordering a starter repair kit on advice from a Suzuki mechanic but I'm not seeing any kit for the KZ700/750 the places I normally order from. Anyone know what I should order or maybe more important how to find out what needs to be swapped out?

Just to completely rule out wiring.
meter on DC V

black probe on battery negative post(post being the metal part of battery not the cable)
red probe on battery positive post
crank starter
note voltage

black probe on starter case
red probe on positive post on starter body
crank starter
note voltage

voltages should be within 0.5V of each other

Voltage should be at least 9.5 V
if both below 9.5v-battery is the problem
if both voltages are different by more than 0.5v-cable issue
if both voltages are within 0.5V and you still have the issue---the starter is the issue

I'm a bit too far away to call the US but thank you. Now I have some things to work with. I just pulled the carbs so gotta wait a bit until they are clean and remounted though.

You can still test the starter without the carbs installed.
Just make sure you have no gasoline near the starter.
