What to consider before buying aftermarket speedo / tach

I have speedhut GPS on three of my bikes. I had a "Minor" issue with my GPZ speedo, Speedhut sent a new replacement - amazing service. Highly recommended.

Bozo, do you remember what wire you used to power the GPS with? I was going to run a wire to the battery but have decided against that. I need to take a look at my harness along with my wiring diagram since I have deleted the starter and went with a motogadget m start.

Power the GPS off the switched 12V circuit (its brown wire on most Kaws I think) If you want hot start that wire goes straight to the battery. I have not found hot start necessary as I usually take a few minutes to warm the bike up and by that point GPS has acquired signal, and it is technically a parasitic draw.

That makes sense, thanks Doc. No need for hot start GPS on these old Kaws.

Bama you can run the live direct off battery, I'm talking about the GPS speedo here, there is a second wire which is the switch wire, maybe you can just have a external switch once the bike is running. Speedhut has good wiring diagrams on their web site (no I don't work for them, I'm in Australia)
Doctorot is correct you can run without battery direct but I found that if the bike is not active for a few days it takes a little longer to start. I like to warm up my bike on the run

Where have installed the GPS antenne?

Gordon the GPS antenna can be mounted anywhere as long as the sky view is not obstructed. My Fj1200 has the antenna under the fairing screen, The GPZ has it in the rear tail section mounting with RTV (plastic does not block the signal ). The Z1R has it mounted on the Indicator

Is it possible to have it inside the side covers?

Not really, it needs to point up with no frame in the way or a bum. As you can see I put the Z1R GPS antenna on the indicator, no-one seems to notice it. The other thing you might be able to do is see if there are different aerial shapes.
As it is when going through a forest the speedo does fluctuate a bit/ At first it looks like the speedo has an issue, after a while you learn to accept this and no longer think about it as the positives out-way the older style speedo and accuracy.
I have seen other GPS speedos on motorcycles but none update the speed as quickly as a speedhut. The needle works exactly like a mechanical type, even under full acceleration.

I can confirm it works behind the side cover as long as it still points up. I have it rigged this way on my KZ750twin. I also have it mounted under the tail section of my KZ1000.

Finally got my speedhut gauge yesterday and it looks fantastic. Have not wired it up yet or put it on the bike but will show it off when I'm done. I will end up taking the gps wire and running it under the tail section of the KZ900.
