Please help me time my Dyna S...(FINALLY RESOLVED!)

Hi George, nice to meet a semi-moderator. I guess I could start a new thread but I figured that with all of the Dyna-chat in this thread, someone could answer my simple questions with three of four terse lines of text along the lines of:

green = xy coil
grey = ab coil

red = positive switched 12v to coil (if that is the case)

forth wire = whatever it is.

Seems that because many people in this thread have installed or are using Dynas, it is far more convenient for them, for me to place my questions, which are relevant to installation and set up, squarely in the middle of a Dyna discussion, then start a new thread where no-one seeing the post will have a reference base regarding a "3" versus a "3a" rotor, complete with pictures, as an example.

As much as I have been all over this web-site as a visitor, reading for information, this is the first time I have come across anyone requesting anyone to refile an information request. Seems to me you could have just answered a couple of simple questions, given your own knowledge base. The request for redirect seems to have squelched the concept of open discussion as well, as I wonder as an example, what you have in mind to say to anyone who ventures to answer the questions I have already posted directly in this forum. Even if I start a new thread as you request, my immediate need for help has gone unanswered.

I left a voicemail with Dyna today, it was already after hours. We will see if I get a response...

Good Luck, dont hold your breath they still havent replied to my e mails of three weeks ago. I am really glad i bought mine off Jeff at Z1 enterprises as he sent out a new one for me straight away.

Got a call back from Dyna today! They are willing to let me bring my bike down and we will check the timing together. He said if it does indeed do what I'm saying they will just swap me out right there.

Now my next hurdle...trying to find the time to ride over there and work with them. I don't really have any free time right now with my kid on summer break. I'll figure something out. Maybe I need a sidecar, hmmm...:silly:

Oh hey stever, I did buy my Dyna from Jeff too. Maybe I should have went to Jeff when it first failed, but I chose to deal with Dyna direct. I don't think it would be fair to Jeff to try to return it to him now.

I had an email conversation with Scott Valentine at Dynatek (he's the tech manager). It seems like some of the problems are Kawasaki related - the machining of the inner points cover can have the points plate set high or low in relation to the crank - with points this is not a big deal as they have lots of adjustment. Dynatek assumes the crank is perfectly centered between the timing pickups and sometimes it's not. I did a quick check of a limited number of inner points covers in the workshop and did find some variation between the machining. Not sure if it's enough to explain this situation, but I noticed over 20 thou difference in the machining high versus low across a half-a-dozen covers.

Dyna admitted to having problems with a limited number of other models with machining variations between bikes.

Today was the day. I towed my bike down to Dynatek early in the morning and worked with Larry/Dynatek to check over my timing and see what was going on. Larry worked on it for quite a bit trying to time it correctly and could not. He ran into the same problems I did. Finally, we put another unit on and bingo. It didn't take 5 minutes and we had it timed smack on - full sync! I am thrilled that this issue is finally behind me (hope I'm not speaking too soon).

Now I must give Dynatek a lot of credit. They hung in there with me the whole way. They sure didn't need to take time out to let me bring my bike down and work with them. They could have told me to go pound salt, but they didn't. They were really patient the whole time.

From what they keep telling me they have never seen this issue before. That's why they wanted to see it with their own eyes I guess. Hopefully they can analyze the defective part, or just know this trouble is possible and it will help to prevent or troubleshoot others in the future.

Jeff, that is something I had not thought of either, but it makes sense. I actually replaced my inner points cover some time ago, so mine is not original. However, my previous Dyna worked fine with this cover so it was indeed trouble pinpointed to the Dyna S.

That's good news - I just sent Scott at Dyna an email to try and get the scoop on the problem.

I knew it was a fault with the unit but I am glad to see it confirmed!
They, "Dyna " have heard of this problem, from me in the e mails I have sent them that they did not bother to reply to , other than to assume I was stupid and simply send me a copy of the instructions.

Hopefully you will now be able to get a few miles on the bike while the sun shines.

I have just bought some throw ocer panniers for mine and am heading off for a quick tour of North Wales next week, cant wait.

Now if they would only send me mine back:angry: Larry told me "yep, we got it July 10, and it was bad, we should have you one out this week". JULY 10 !!!! And this is AUGUST 7. That isn't the turn around time I was told back in July.

But great news for you Roland !!! Glad you showed them there IS a problem with them. Maybe not everyone of them, but some of them for sure.

I spoke with Larry at Dyna the other day about this problem - they'd disected Roland's old ignition and found the alignment of the sensors to be bad in that unit. I also sent them two more units to assess (one being Steve's from the UK). Once they get a chance to investigate more, I'll see what info I get back from them.

Just wondering, did you get any more info out of Dyna re these problems.
Reason I am asking is that even the replacement one you sent me timed up at the limit of adjustment, that does not matter, but what I am slightly worried about is if the problem is that the pick ups are some how loose in the cases am I likely to have problems with the timing moving, or is the problem that the pick ups are securely fastened but in the wrong place?
