Please help me time my Dyna S...(FINALLY RESOLVED!)

This story just won't end...

I picked up my new Dyna S from Dynatek today. Went home slapped it in and proceeded to static time it. Problem is I don't have enough adjustment on the modules to get it set correctly. My old Dyna S installed no problem, I'm not sure what could be different with this one. The unit looks identical to me.

I can get one side set correctly then when I go to set the other side I run out of adjustment room on the module.

I found an old post where someone had the same trouble, but it didn't mention what the fix was. Any ideas?

All I can tell you is I remember a discussion where the fix was to elongate some mounting holes.

Wish I could be more helpful, but you might try the archives.

I remeber a few like that, dyna and maybe boyer, just file the holes longer

I don't think filing the holes will make a difference. I can get the left side set using the backplate. It's the right side module adjustment that I run out of.

I'm almost thinking that maybe something is holding my rotor slightly advanced on the advancer unit thus making me over compensate.

Roland... Please do this... loosen the screws that hold the plate. Move the plate so the slots center on the mount screws. Loosen the small allen bolts for BOTH pickups. Center the plate and and move the LEFT (1/4) pickup to find the timing at TDC for 1/4... They typically don't seem to pay much attention at the factory how they line up the pickups... Once you have the 1/4, you should be able to find the 2/3 by moving pickup as well...

Chances are, the 1/4 pickup was just tossed on there and may be at the VERY end of slot adjustment where it is located. I have had this happen on about a half dozen Dyna S units I have installed.

Got a bit more info on this here...

I came home last night and tried everything from scratch again using any and all techniques I read about here. Still nothing!

I called and spoke with Dyna today and lo and behold there is actually another rotor that was used with the Dyna S that is about 10 degrees different. It has the stamp of 3A on the end vs. the one I have which is only a 3. They are going to send it out to me and we will see if that helps.

Thinking this through it my head it would make sense. If the 3A rotor is 10 degrees more advanced then I won't have to adjust the plate to such an extreme when setting the 1/4 module. This should give me plenty of adjustable range on the 2/3 side.

I'll throw another question out there for those with Dyna S ignitions. When you installed your rotor on the advancer the magnet should point to the left side when the 1/4 is at the top. Does yours point directly left (due West) or is it in more of a southwest direction on the left?

Savedrider, I'm interest to know if that rotor was the wrong one (10 degrees advanced).

I note in a concurrent posting member "1045" had a similar problem and reportedly has solved it, by not carring out the advanced static test, but just dynamically timing it with a timing light. I have asked 1045 some pertinent questions.

I am having exactly the same problem with the Dyna S ignition I have fitted to my Z1 I have e mailed Jeff at Z1 enterprises and the factory, if I get a reply I will let you know, likewise please let me know how you get on
