I have to disagree on the pilots. I see air pilots like the KZ900A4. I'm going to add to HRM data and say because of the single fuel inlet between 2&3 and the Idle speed adjustment on the bottom your carbs are 1979 Kz1000 A3 USA model.

I got these carbs off eBay and I’m still using the needle that was in it and can’t read the numbers but it is 5 slotted one. The reason I’m still using that one is, no matter what new needle have tried that’s come with kits or the 5DL31 I’ve ordered it will not run with out the 5 slotted one. It will idle and rev a little but won’t go down the road. I know that’s a little off topic.

Right, I don’t have the fuel screw under the bowl, that’s what I’ve kinda went by when looking at partzilla trying to figure out what I had.

hardrockminer wrote: From the photos it appears that your carbs have fuel/air screws and don't have the pilot adjusters. They also have a pump on the bottom of #2 carb. I think you said your old needle jet was an O4? That would make the carbs either a '79 or '80 KZ1000 for the US market. (Canada was a bit different.) The needle used in '79 was a 5CN17 adjustable with 5 slots. In 1980 they used a 5CN29 needle with no adjusting slots. What needle is in your bike?

Edited to add that the '79 LTD used the same carbs but a larger needle jet....O6.

Edited again to add that sometimes the nets are a loose fit but sometimes they are like an interference fit. What I've done in the past for tight ones is to use a piece of wood dowel (and a small hammer) in the main jet tube to tap the needle jet into place.

I almost started to tap one in but wasn’t sure if it would either warp the jet or mess up the carb body, wrapped jet would be an easy fix, but damaged carb body is something else, and me not having tried that before I talked myself out of trying it. Lol

If you can pull you needle and mic it out compare it to this chart. Might help identify.

EDIT, The 5CN17 that is used in the '79 has 5 adjustable spaces. and from what I see that the carbs you should have. It still uses the 0-4 needle jet.

There are spec documents that shows the full specs for Kawasaki models. All models. It's too large to attach the full PDF, but I have extracted pages for the 78-80 Kz1000. It shows the full carb specs for the 78-80 A, D, and E models, but oddly doesn't list the B or C models.

At any rate, both the A3A, A4 ('79 and '80 KZ1000 MK2) and D1, D3 ('78 and '80 Z1R) models came with the VM28 carbs. The pumps arrived in '79, the '78 D1 did not have them. I confirmed that the factory service manual for the A3A, A4, D1, and D3 also list the VM28.

This browser does not support PDFs. Please download the PDF to view it: Download PDF

I have a small magnifying glass to read codes on small carb parts.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I believe I have the 5CN17, needles, so the needle jet would be the 0-4. The Keyster kit I ordered doesn’t specify the needle jet size. But it was for a Kz 1000 79-80 intermediate. So those should have fit right?

If we could get gd4now to chime in I think he can decode the stamping on the carb flange.

Edit, the kits I have purchased through Keyster direct have called out the needle size, then that is labeled to “s” then they include two needles leaner and two richer. Maybe because my kits and carbs use a non adjustable needle. Yours that have the clip positions not so sure. Keyster sequence is “LL” “L” “S” “R” “RR”

The Keyster I got had one needle with clip positions. I’ll take a pic of the box tomorrow and post it.
