Hi all in next day or so will post pic carbs to be IDed.

In the mean time is the following corrret? This refers to 28 and 29mm SB.

1. All Mikuni SB's have the small square on the side of carb just above bowl flange?

2. Very early 29mm (not 28's) have small angled
brass drain screw rather then the large 17mm
central drain plug?

3. No SB,s have bowl over flow spigot/tube/hose?

Please don.t refer me to Jeff's SB guide as it does not have all the answers l need.

Thankz.

Mikuni didn't offer a 28mm Smoothbore carb.

Referring to Mikuni 29mm Smoothbore carbs:

29mm SB has the square.
Some early 29mm SB had side located drain screws.
SBs don't have overflow circuits.

Good Fortune! :)

Thankz for that, can anyone ID these carbs fitted to an Australian market Suzuki GS1000S T 1980.

UK and Australian market bikes got VM28SS carbs on the 1979 GS1000S N and VM30SS on the 1980 GS1000S T fitted from the factory.

This is my point Peter, they appear to be 29 SB's but have an over flow tube??

Hello Ross
I read here that some very early sets of 29mm smoothbore carbs have a float bowl with a small drain screw angled to the side.

But its difficult to see in the pic. www.beezeees.com/resources/carbs/z1-carb-guide.aspx.html

SB's have pot metal bodies. OEM's have the heavy Zinc bodies. If you look at the venturi of the carburetor in question, all doubts are removed. No jet block ...not SB. It's just that simple.

It is my understanding that the smooth bore carbs have a brass bead showing in the little rectangle cast into the side of the carb (see pic below), and consequently, they are easy to identify without taking them apart. Is this true? Ed

YES!
Also if talking of the later suzukis.
1000 katana had 32mm and 34mm smoothbores but neither type has removable jet block.
They are still identified by the cast square around the brass blanking ball.

I know this is a old topic but thought i would put this out there for anyone searching for info on these carbs.

I think they may be the VM30SS as used on the Australian & NZ GS1000S
They have a oval bore and overflow tubes, they are marked 49120
I am using a set on a GPZ1100B1 with 130 main 20 pilot 1.5 slide and 5DL36 needle (middle slot)

Thanks for the info.  I have a list of many ID for the carbs that came stock on the Suzuki bikes but it covers the US/Can/UK but not other parts of the world.  The list does not have that ID listed but indicates the use of VM32ss carbs on some of the bikes with ID of 49310, 49320, 49520.
