1973 Z1 Maui

For aluminum parts that need to be thoroughly cleaned, I use a small soda blasting setup.  I bought a cheap blasting gun from amazon (it's got a small hopper and a connection for an air line) and a 50lb bag of soda blasting medium from harbor freight.

It's fantastic for cleaning hubs and engine parts, and the soda is water soluble. 

It won't remove most corrosion or rust however.

So the soda blasting medium is baking soda, is that correct ?

Baking soda, yes, and a pretty good size compressor.

Fnally got my valve spring compressor.
Removed the valves, some of which were pretty sooty. I think this is due to the choke plungers not sealing well making it rich. I sent the plungers to Robert Meggitt in the UK, he does some magic on them. The valves are cleaning up, the compression was good so I think some lapping will clean it up ok. I’ll of course check the guides, which were done in 2009 and don’t have much time on them. I think I will do the seals because I’m there.
Then it’s on to prepping the head for new paint which I’m sure will consume massive amounts of time.

I opened up the case today to start cleaning. I found something that does not appear to be in any of the parts books I have. It’s the red circled bolts with the number 4 on top. My parts book and my Brookes book does not seem to show it unless I’m missing something. Curious.

That is the kick start spot.

Kawasaki 13072-012…. Look at the included fishe, number 22 are the bolts, 21 is the lock tab plate, 20 is the stop.

Normal is to flip the engine upside down and when you split the cases everything stays in the upper case. 

Make sure you keep the half moon transmission lock ring shown at the red arrows they go in the grooves in the upper case, before the trans in installed.

 

 

Thank you, I’m changing my setup so I can assemble upside down like I should. I have the rings safely on the bearings.

I believe the number 4 indicates the bolt strength, and is the lowest strength bolt made.  I've never seen them in that location before.

The two circled bolts attach the kick start pawl.  No reason the remove them we know of unless replacing the pawl.  We've never heard of a pawl failing.

Thank you all, I'm really in deep now getting it all cleaned up. Now is when the parts ordering gets expensive so I can assemble when ready. I need to blue check the valves and do a little test lapping to make sure they are ok.
